Nagao Pass

Nagao Pass, or Nagaotoge, is the mountain saddle that separates Hakone from the city of Gotemba in neighbouring Shizuoka Prefecture, and it doubles as one of the region's great scenic lookouts. Sitting at around 910 metres, the pass is pierced by a road tunnel, and on either side the views open dramatically: eastward back over the Hakone caldera and Lake Ashi, and westward toward the vast, unobstructed bulk of Mount Fuji looming over the Gotemba plain. Because the Gotemba side faces the mountain so directly, this is one of the closest and most imposing Fuji views accessible from the Hakone area.

The pass forms part of the Hakone Skyline, a toll road that runs along the ridge between Sengokuhara and Gotemba and links with the Ashinoko Skyline to create a continuous panoramic driving route around the caldera rim. Nagao Pass is a natural stopping point on this circuit, with a car park and viewing area where drivers pause to take in the scenery. Historically the pass was an important crossing point between the Kanto and Tokai regions, and it retains the feel of a genuine mountain gateway, with cool air, open skies, and long views in both directions.

What sets Nagao Pass apart from the other lookouts along the skyline is the sheer scale of Fuji as seen from the Gotemba side. Without a lake in the foreground the mountain simply fills the western horizon, its lower slopes sweeping down toward the town and its summit — snow-capped for much of the year — dominating the sky. In autumn the surrounding hillsides turn brilliant shades of red and orange, and in winter the combination of clear, frigid air and a fresh coat of snow on Fuji produces the most striking views of all.

As with all Fuji viewpoints, timing is critical. The mountain is most reliably visible in the early morning during the colder half of the year, when dry air keeps the summit clear of cloud. By midday, especially in spring and summer, Fuji often vanishes behind a bank of cloud that builds against its flanks, so an early arrival greatly improves the odds. Even on hazier days the eastward view over Lake Ashi and the green ridges of the national park makes the pass worth the stop.

Nagao Pass is realistically reached only by car or motorcycle, as no public transport runs along the skyline. Most visitors incorporate it into a drive that also takes in the Ashinoko Skyline, Mikuni Pass, and the Daikanzan lookout on the Hakone Turnpike, stringing the region's best panoramas together into a single scenic loop. Allow half an hour to park, walk to the viewpoint, and photograph Fuji from both sides of the pass. For those touring by rental car from Gotemba or Hakone, it is one of the easiest and most rewarding Fuji vistas to reach.
