Monjusen-ji Temple

Monjusen-ji is an ancient mountain temple tucked beneath a towering cliff on the eastern side of the Kunisaki Peninsula, dedicated to Monju Bosatsu, the bodhisattva of wisdom. Atmospheric, secluded and steeped in the peninsula's Rokugo Manzan tradition, it is a rewarding destination for travellers exploring the sacred mountains within reach of Beppu, and a place of pilgrimage for anyone seeking a boost of intelligence or exam success.

The temple is traditionally counted among the oldest and most important sites of Rokugo Manzan, the distinctive blend of esoteric Buddhism, Shinto and mountain asceticism that flourished across Kunisaki under the influence of the great Usa shrine. Founded, by tradition, in the 7th or 8th century, Monjusen-ji became a centre for the worship of Monju, and it is often ranked alongside two other temples elsewhere in Japan as one of the country's three great sites dedicated to the bodhisattva of wisdom. Generations of monks pursued rigorous mountain training here, and the temple retains a powerful sense of spiritual seclusion.

Reaching the main hall involves a walk up stone steps through cool forest, emerging at buildings set dramatically against and partly beneath a great overhanging rock face, a hallmark of Kunisaki's mountain temples. The setting, with weathered timber halls, mossy stone and the sheer cliff rising behind, is both beautiful and evocative of the ascetic life once led here. Monjusen-ji is best known today as a temple of learning. Students and their families travel here to pray for success in examinations, and a sacred spring on the grounds is said to grant wisdom to those who drink from it, with the charming belief that each visit makes one a little cleverer. This association makes the temple especially busy around the New Year and examination seasons, when hopeful visitors come to seek Monju's blessing. Charms and amulets for academic success are a popular souvenir.

The temple's forested grounds are lovely across the seasons, particularly in autumn when the maples colour the mountainside, adding natural beauty to the spiritual atmosphere. As with the peninsula's other treasures, part of the appeal is the sense of discovering a place little known even within Japan, far from the crowds of the major tourist temples.

Monjusen-ji pairs naturally with the wider circuit of Rokugo Manzan sites, from the head temple of Futago-ji and the National Treasure hall of Fuki-ji to the Kumano Magaibutsu rock carvings and the shrine of Usa Jingu. Because the peninsula's interior has little public transport, a car is the practical way to reach it, about 55 minutes from Beppu, and around 50 minutes allows time to climb to the halls, visit the sacred spring and soak up the mountain setting.
