Kushima Castle (Omura Park)

Kushima Castle, the seat of the Omura clan, survives today as the stone-walled centrepiece of Omura Park, one of the most beloved flower-viewing spots in all of Nagasaki Prefecture. Built in the early seventeenth century by the Omura family, who governed this domain and hold a notable place in history as the lords of Japan's first Christian daimyo, the castle guarded the fertile lands around Omura Bay. Although the keep and main structures were dismantled after the feudal era, the imposing stone ramparts, moats, and gates remain, and the grounds have been transformed into a public park that draws visitors from across the region.

The Omura clan's history gives the site added depth. Omura Sumitada, the domain's sixteenth-century lord, became the first Japanese feudal ruler to convert to Christianity and was instrumental in opening nearby Nagasaki as a port for Portuguese trade, a decision that shaped the entire subsequent history of the region.
