Itsukinomiya Hall of History

The Itsukinomiya Hall of History, known in Japanese as the Itsukinomiya Rekishi Taiken-kan, is the immersive, hands-on counterpart to the nearby Saiku Historical Museum, and together they bring to life the extraordinary lost world of the Saio — the imperial princesses who served as sacred priestesses to Ise Jingu for more than six centuries. Where the museum presents artefacts and scholarship, this hall lets you step inside the elegant court culture of the Heian period, when the Saio and her attendants lived at the palace-town of Saiku in refined ritual seclusion.

The hall recreates the aristocratic life of the era through beautifully reconstructed interiors, life-size dioramas and, above all, participatory experiences. Visitors can try on replica Heian court dress, including the famous junihitoe, the layered twelve-robe formal costume of noblewomen, and the flowing garments of courtiers, a rare chance to feel the weight and colour of clothing usually seen only behind glass. There are traditional court games to play, such as the incense-guessing and shell-matching pastimes that filled the leisurely days of the nobility, and calligraphy and craft activities that connect visitors directly to the sensibilities of the age. Much of this is free of charge, making it an unusually generous and family-friendly attraction.

The experience is grounded in the poignant history of the Saio herself. Chosen from among the imperial princesses and ritually purified, she was escorted from the capital in the grand Saio-dai procession — an event still commemorated today in a colourful annual festival at Saiku — to live far from home in service to the sun goddess Amaterasu at Ise. The hall conveys both the beauty and the loneliness of that life, and helps visitors understand why the wider Saiku site, with its buried palace foundations and reconstructed Heian buildings, is one of the most atmospheric historical landscapes in the Kansai region.

Stepping outside, the hall is surrounded by the open parkland of the Saiku ruins, where the grassy outlines of the ancient town stretch across the fields and full-scale reconstructions of Heian palace buildings stand nearby. In spring the whole site is framed by cherry blossom, and the flat, walkable grounds are a delight to explore on foot or by rental bicycle from the adjacent Saiku Station. The annual Saio Matsuri, with its procession of participants in Heian costume, is the highlight of the local calendar.

For travellers, the Itsukinomiya Hall of History offers something rare: an interactive, tactile encounter with a period of Japanese culture more often glimpsed only in The Tale of Genji or museum vitrines. Combined with the free Saiku Historical Museum a short walk away and the reconstructed palace buildings between them, it makes for a rewarding and unusual half-day that reveals the human institution behind Ise Jingu. Reached in an eight-minute walk from Saiku Station on the Kintetsu line, and free to enter, it is an easy and memorable stop for anyone interested in Heian Japan.
