Utsubo Park

Utsubo Park is a long, leafy green rectangle in the middle of Osaka's Nishi ward business district, a rare and welcome breathing space among the office towers just west of the Hommachi commercial core. Around 9.7 hectares in size, it runs east to west in a slender band divided by a road, with a tree-lined central promenade, lawns, a stream, a children's play area and the tennis courts of the Utsubo Tennis Center, which has hosted international tournaments.

The park carries an unexpected history. The land served as an Allied forces landing strip in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War, and only in 1952 was it converted into public green space. After decades as a quiet local park, it was thrust back into the spotlight in 2006 when Osaka hosted the World Rose Convention here, a fitting honour given that its oval rose garden at the eastern end is the oldest in the city. Today that rose garden, with its formal beds and pergolas, is the park's signature feature and a magnet for photographers when the flowers peak.

Around the roses and along the promenade, Utsubo has become one of central Osaka's most fashionable districts. Since the 1990s the streets bordering the park have filled with stylish cafes, bakeries and boutiques, and open-air weddings are sometimes held in the rose garden. The result is a park that pairs greenery with a refined urban buzz, popular with office workers at lunch, families at the weekend and couples in the evening.

The visiting experience is easy and free. Flat, well-kept paths run the length of the park, making it fully accessible for wheelchairs and strollers, and benches and lawns give plenty of places to pause. It is compact enough to enjoy in around 45 minutes, and its central location makes it a natural green interlude in a day of shopping or business in the Hommachi and Utsubo area.

The best time to visit is when the roses bloom, around mid-May and again in mid-October, when the eastern garden is at its most colourful. Spring also brings cherry blossoms along the promenade, and the surrounding cafe streets are pleasant year round, making the park an easy stop in any season.

Getting there is simple. Hommachi Station, served by the Midosuji, Chuo and Yotsubashi subway lines, lies about a seven-minute walk to the east, and Awaza Station on the Chuo and Sen-nichimae lines is close to the western end. The subway is not covered by the Japan Rail Pass but accepts ICOCA and other IC cards. Combine a visit with the shops of nearby Shinsaibashi or the business-district cafes that have made this one of Osaka's most quietly stylish corners.
