Umikaji Terrace (Senaga Island)

Umikaji Terrace is a whitewashed, terraced complex of cafés, restaurants and shops cascading down a hillside on Senaga Island, a small islet linked by causeway to the main island just south of Naha Airport. With its bright white buildings, sea views and Mediterranean-resort styling, it has become one of the most photogenic and popular casual-dining spots near the Okinawan capital, especially at sunset.

The appeal is straightforward: a collection of relaxed eateries and boutiques arranged so that many of their terraces face west over the East China Sea, catching the sunset. The food is varied and easygoing — Okinawan taco rice and Blue Seal ice cream sit alongside seafood, burgers, tropical smoothies, craft drinks and international café fare — and the emphasis is on grazing with a view rather than serious gastronomy. Several venues have open-air seating where you can nurse a drink and watch the light change over the water.

Senaga Island's position right beside Naha Airport gives Umikaji Terrace an unexpected extra thrill: aircraft taking off and landing pass low overhead at regular intervals, close enough to read the airline liveries. Plane-spotters and photographers gather here for exactly that, and combined with the sunset it makes for memorable images. The island also has a small shrine and a footpath around its edge for those who want a short walk before or after eating.

Its location is a major convenience. Just a few minutes from Naha Airport by car, Umikaji Terrace is an ideal first or last stop on an Okinawa trip — somewhere to unwind before a flight or ease into the holiday on arrival — and it is reachable by a shuttle bus from Akamine monorail station for those without a car. Parking is available on the island for drivers.

Entry is free; you pay only for what you eat, drink or buy, and prices are moderate for a scenic spot. The complex keeps long daytime and evening hours, but late afternoon into sunset is unquestionably the time to come, when the terraces fill, the sea turns golden and the planes glide past overhead. More polished and resort-like than Naha's gritty markets, Umikaji Terrace offers a different, breezier side of Okinawan eating — casual, coastal and camera-ready — and rounds out any food tour of the island with a proper sea view.
