Takino Suzuran Hillside National Government Park

Takino Suzuran Hillside National Government Park, in the southern hills of Sapporo's Minami ward, is the only kokuei, or national government, park in all of Hokkaido, and its scale reflects that status. Spread across a huge expanse of forested hillside and open meadow within Shikotsu-Toya National Park, it is a beautifully designed all-season destination that combines vast seasonal flower displays, gardens, waterfalls, walking trails, playgrounds, and, in winter, a snow-play area, making it one of greater Sapporo's most popular outings for families and garden lovers alike.

The park changes character dramatically through the year. In spring, sweeping displays of tulips and other bulbs, along with fields of bright yellow canola, carpet the Country Garden and hillside terraces. Summer brings the park to its floral peak, with immense fields of poppies, salvia, and countless other blooms arranged in bold sweeps of colour across the slopes, best surveyed from the higher paths that look down over the patterned fields toward the surrounding mountains. Autumn shifts the palette to cosmos, dahlias, and the reds and golds of the wooded areas, while the whole park is threaded with streams and punctuated by the graceful Ashiribetsu Falls, a broad, multi-tiered waterfall reckoned one of the finest in the Sapporo area and designated among Japan's notable falls.

Beyond the flowers, the park is built for active enjoyment. There are large adventure playgrounds, including a hugely popular area of giant trampoline-like domes that children can bounce across, forest trails and cycling paths, and open lawns for picnics. An information centre, restaurants, and rest areas provide comfort, and the park's size means it rarely feels crowded even on busy days. In winter, when snow blankets the hills, part of the park reopens as a snow-play zone with tube runs, cross-country ski trails, and snowshoeing, turning the summer flower fields into a white playground.

Because it is a managed national park facility, Takino Suzuran is well maintained and family-friendly, with clear signage, accessible paths in the central areas, and seasonal shuttle carts to help visitors cover the extensive grounds. There is a modest entrance fee for adults, with children admitted free or at reduced rates, and opening hours shift with the seasons, closing earlier in winter. Because the park is so large, comfortable shoes and a plan of which zones to prioritise help you make the most of a visit, and a full exploration can easily fill half a day or more.

Getting there is easy without a car. From central Sapporo, take the Namboku subway line to its southern terminus at Makomanai, then a bus that runs to the park entrances in around half an hour. The park pairs naturally with the nearby Jozankei hot springs and the southern hills for a day out of the city.
