Mount Soranuma

Mount Soranuma rises to 1,251 metres in the mountainous southern reaches of Sapporo, beyond the Jozankei hot-spring area, and it is a favourite among Hokkaido hikers for its wide summit views and, above all, for one of the earliest and most vivid displays of alpine autumn colour anywhere near the city. This is a genuine mountain climb rather than a casual viewpoint, and the reward at the top is a sweeping panorama of the surrounding peaks of the Shikotsu-Toya region and, on clear days, distant volcanic cones and the Ishikari Plain.

The great draw of Soranuma is the high marsh, or numa, that gives the mountain its name, set just below the summit. In early autumn, typically from late September into early October, the wetland grasses and low alpine plants turn a brilliant crimson and gold, weeks ahead of the foliage in the lowlands. The sight of the fiery marsh cupped among the peaks, often with a small tarn reflecting the sky, is one of the signature autumn images of the Sapporo mountains and draws dedicated hikers each season to catch it at its brief peak.

Reaching the top demands effort and preparation. The trail climbs steadily through dense forest before opening onto ridge and marshland higher up, and the round trip typically takes the better part of a day. Sections can be muddy, rooty and steep, and Hokkaido mountain weather is notoriously changeable, so proper hiking boots, layers, food, water and a rain shell are essential; this is not a walk to attempt casually or in poor conditions. Because the mountain lies in bear country, many hikers carry a bell and stay alert, as is standard practice on Hokkaido trails.

The experience is very different from the city's easy lookouts. Where Mount Moiwa offers a cable-car night view and Maruyama a gentle forest stroll, Soranuma is a proper mountain day out, with the solitude, physical challenge and grand scale that implies. For those with the fitness and equipment, it is deeply rewarding — the quiet of the high forest, the drama of the autumn marsh, and the earned satisfaction of a summit panorama that few casual visitors ever see.

Access is more involved than for the city viewpoints, as the trailhead sits deep in the mountains south of Jozankei. Most hikers drive, though the area can be reached by bus toward Jozankei and onward transport; either way it is worth researching current trail and access conditions before setting out, as the approach roads and the trail itself can be affected by weather and season. There are no facilities on the mountain beyond the trailhead, so come self-sufficient.

For active travellers who want to experience Hokkaido's wilder side within Sapporo's boundaries, Mount Soranuma is a standout, especially in the fleeting early-autumn window when its marsh turns to fire. Plan a full day, go properly equipped and only in good weather, start early, and you will be rewarded with an alpine viewpoint and a seasonal spectacle that rank among the finest the region offers.
