Sounzan

Sounzan is a small but pivotal district high on the slopes above Gora, functioning as the key transfer point in Hakone's chain of mountain transport. It sits at the top of the Hakone Tozan Cable Car, the funicular that climbs steeply from Gora, and is the lower terminus of the Hakone Ropeway, the aerial cableway that soars on toward the volcanic valley of Owakudani and down to Togendai on Lake Ashi. Almost everyone completing the standard Hakone loop passes through Sounzan.

The district's identity is bound up with movement and elevation. Perched on a forested ridge, it offers cool air and, on clear days, expansive views across the caldera. The main structures here are the transit stations themselves, connected so that travelers can step off the cable car and, a short walk away, board the swaying ropeway gondolas that lift them over the ridgeline toward the sulphur vents of Owakudani. That first ropeway span, cresting the ridge above Sounzan, delivers one of Hakone's iconic reveals: on fine days, Mount Fuji appears floating beyond the valley.

Historically, Sounzan grew purely as infrastructure, built to link the railway and lake systems and open the volcanic heart of Hakone to sightseers. The cable car and ropeway together transformed a rugged, hard-to-reach interior into a smooth, scenic journey, and Sounzan is the seam that stitches the two halves together.

A notable fact is the sheer efficiency of the connection: the funicular and ropeway are timed to feed passengers between them, and a single Hakone Freepass covers the whole sequence from Yumoto through Sounzan to the lake and back. The ridge-top setting also means Sounzan often sits right at the cloud line, so conditions can shift quickly.

The visiting experience is brief but memorable. Few people linger long in Sounzan itself, since it is primarily a transfer stop, but the ridge views and the anticipation of the ropeway ride give it a distinct sense of arrival at the high country. Facilities are compact and functional, with restrooms and a small shop, and the transfer between cable car and ropeway is short and largely step-free, making the crossing manageable for most travelers.

Autumn is a superb time, when the forested slopes below the ridge turn brilliant with koyo color viewed from the gondolas, and winter brings crisp, clear air that maximizes the chance of a sharp Fuji sighting. Summer is cool and pleasant, while spring offers fresh green. Because the ropeway occasionally halts for high winds or volcanic gas readings at Owakudani, it is wise to check operating status and travel earlier in the day.

Getting there is part of the fun. From Gora, board the Hakone Tozan Cable Car and ride it up the steep grade to Sounzan, the top stop, in under ten minutes. At Sounzan, walk the short distance to the ropeway station and continue toward Owakudani and Togendai, or reverse the trip back down to Gora. Sounzan sits squarely in the middle of the Hakone circuit, making it an unavoidable and rewarding waypoint rather than a destination to seek out on its own.
