Maruyama Zoo

Maruyama Zoo, tucked into the greenery beside Maruyama Park on the western edge of central Sapporo, is one of the oldest and best-loved zoos in Japan. Opened in 1951, it has grown over the decades into a modern, conservation-minded institution while retaining the friendly, accessible character that makes it a firm favourite with Sapporo families and a delightful stop for visitors of all ages, especially those travelling with children or looking for an enjoyable all-weather day out.

The zoo is home to a wide variety of animals from around the world, but it is particularly celebrated for species suited to Hokkaido's cold climate, above all its polar bears. The polar bear enclosure, with underwater viewing windows that let you watch the great animals dive and swim right past the glass, is a highlight and a reliable crowd-pleaser, and the bears are often at their most active in the depths of the Sapporo winter, when the snow and cold suit them perfectly. Alongside the polar bears, the zoo cares for Hokkaido's native wildlife, including brown bears, Ezo deer, red foxes and owls, giving visitors a chance to meet the creatures of the northern forests they might otherwise never see.

In recent years Maruyama Zoo has invested heavily in modern, naturalistic enclosures designed around the wellbeing of the animals and the idea of showing them in environments that reflect their natural habitats. Newer facilities house Asian elephants, big cats, primates and tropical species in spacious, thoughtfully designed settings, and the zoo places a strong emphasis on education and conservation, explaining the threats these animals face in the wild and the role zoos play in protecting them. The result is a visit that is both entertaining and quietly informative.

The zoo's setting adds to its appeal. It adjoins Maruyama Park and the sacred forest of Hokkaido Shrine, one of the city's most important Shinto sites, so a day here can easily be combined with a walk among the tall trees, a visit to the shrine, and, in spring, some of Sapporo's finest cherry blossoms, for which Maruyama Park is famous. Autumn brings rich foliage to the same woods, making the surrounding area beautiful in more than one season.

Generous in size, a full visit can occupy half a day, and the mix of indoor animal houses and outdoor enclosures means there is always somewhere sheltered when the weather turns, making it a dependable choice on rainy or snowy days. Facilities are good, with restaurants, rest areas and a gift shop, and the layout is easy to navigate with strollers.

Reaching the zoo is simple: it is about a fifteen-minute walk, or a short bus ride, from Maruyama Koen Station on the Tozai Subway Line, west of the city centre. Admission is very reasonable, especially given the size of the collection and the quality of the enclosures. For a warm, family-friendly counterpoint to Sapporo's museums and viewpoints, and for the chance to watch polar bears swim beneath the northern snow, Maruyama Zoo is a genuinely enjoyable stop.
