Asahiyama Memorial Park

Asahiyama Memorial Park occupies a wooded hillside on the western side of central Sapporo, just above the well-known Maruyama district, and it offers one of the finest, and most easily reached, panoramas of the city. Opened in 1970 to mark the hundredth anniversary of Sapporo's founding, the park climbs a slope to a lookout terrace set about 137 metres above sea level, from which the whole grid of the city spreads out below toward the Ishikari Plain and the distant Sea of Japan. By day the view takes in the ordered streets, the TV Tower, and the surrounding hills; after dark it becomes a glittering carpet of lights, making the park a favourite spot for a free night view without the queues and fees of commercial observation decks.

The park is more than a viewpoint. Its landscaped grounds include lawns, a large fountain and water feature, walking paths that wind up through the trees, and seasonal plantings that give it a different character month by month. In late April and early May the cherry trees bloom, drawing hanami picnickers, and the fresh green of early summer and the reds and golds of autumn make the hillside attractive throughout the warmer half of the year. Benches and open spaces near the lookout invite visitors to linger, and the gentle climb through the woods is a pleasant escape from the busy city below.

Because it sits close to the city centre yet high on the hillside, Asahiyama Memorial Park is popular with couples, families, and photographers, particularly around sunset and into the evening when the lights come on. It is free to enter and open as a public park, with restrooms and, in season, a small cafe and refreshment options. The main lookout terrace is the highlight, but the paths above and around it offer quieter corners and slightly different angles over the city.

The park's proximity to other western Sapporo attractions makes it easy to combine into a day of sightseeing. The Maruyama area below holds the expansive Maruyama Park, the important Hokkaido Shrine, and the city's zoo and sports facilities, all within a short distance, so a visit to Asahiyama can cap an afternoon spent exploring this leafy, cultured side of the city. The climb to the lookout is modest but real, so comfortable shoes help, and an evening visit rewards you with the best of the view as the city lights up.

Getting there is simple. Take the Tozai subway line to Maruyama-koen Station, from where a short bus ride or a moderate uphill walk of fifteen to twenty minutes brings you to the park. Those with a car will find parking, though it can be busy on fine evenings and during cherry-blossom season. For visitors who want a memorable view over Sapporo, especially the night panorama, without paying for an observation tower, Asahiyama Memorial Park is one of the city's best-kept and most accessible secrets, a genuine local favourite just minutes from the centre.
