Kondoi Beach

Kondoi Beach is the swimming beach of Taketomi, a minuscule coral island in the Yaeyama group just off Ishigaki, and it is many travellers' idea of tropical paradise made real. The water here is so shallow and so clear that at low tide broad sandbars emerge from the lagoon, letting you wade far out across a mirror of turquoise while the sea barely reaches your knees. The sand is pure white pulverised coral, soft and cool, and the whole scene, framed by a few pandanus and low dunes, has a gentle, dreamlike quality that stays with visitors long after they leave.

Taketomi itself is the draw as much as the beach. The island is tiny, flat, and car-free in spirit, its single village a preserved cluster of traditional Ryukyuan houses with red-tiled roofs, coral-stone walls, and hibiscus spilling over the lanes. Water buffalo carts amble through the streets, and the whole island can be cycled in under an hour. Reaching Kondoi Beach is part of the charm: most visitors rent a bicycle at the port and pedal across the island on quiet white-sand paths to the western shore, a ride of only ten or fifteen minutes.

The beach is ideal for families and casual swimmers precisely because the water is so shallow and calm; there is little in the way of waves or current within the lagoon, and children can paddle safely for a long way out. Snorkelling improves as the tide comes in and the water deepens over patches of coral, where small tropical fish gather. Because the sea is so shallow, the water warms quickly and swimming is best from late spring through autumn; at very low tide the swimming area recedes, so checking the tide table helps you plan.

Kondoi is a natural beach with only basic facilities, restrooms, simple showers, and a small parking and rest area, so bring your own water, snacks, and sun protection, as there is little shade and no lifeguard. Its unspoilt simplicity is exactly the point: this is not a resort beach but a quiet, protected strand where the loudest sound is the wind in the pandanus. Nearby, the small Kaiji Beach is famous for its star-shaped sand, tiny star-shaped grains that are actually the shells of microscopic organisms, and the two beaches are easily combined on a bicycle loop.

Getting to Taketomi is straightforward once you reach Ishigaki, the hub of the Yaeyama Islands, which is served by air from Naha, Tokyo, and Osaka. From Ishigaki Port high-speed ferries make the crossing to Taketomi in only ten to fifteen minutes, running frequently through the day. No car is needed on the island; bicycles, the buffalo carts, and a minibus cover everything. For travellers venturing to Japan's far southwestern islands, a day on Taketomi with a long swim at Kondoi Beach is one of the purest, most peaceful experiences the whole country has to offer.
