Kaike Onsen

Kaike Onsen is a seaside hot-spring resort near the city of Yonago in western Tottori, and it holds an unusual distinction among Japanese onsen: its thermal waters were discovered bubbling up right along the shoreline of the Sea of Japan. This gives Kaike a rare combination of hot-spring relaxation and beachfront setting, with the added splendor of Mount Daisen rising behind the town.

The springs were found in the late nineteenth century, reportedly when hot water was noticed welling up amid the coastal shallows, and the resort grew up around them. The water here is mildly saline, reflecting its seaside origin, and is prized for warming the body and soothing tired muscles. Many of the hotels and ryokan that line the front offer baths and open-air rotenburo positioned to look straight out over the water, so bathers can soak in warm mineral water while gazing at the waves and the wide coastal horizon, an especially memorable experience at sunset when the sky over the Sea of Japan glows.

Kaike's beachfront location sets it apart from mountain and riverside hot-spring towns. A long sandy beach fronts the district, popular for swimming and strolling in the warmer months, and the promenade along the shore is a pleasant place to walk at any time of year. On clear days the near-perfect cone of Mount Daisen, sometimes called the Fuji of the San'in region, dominates the skyline behind the town, framing the resort with one of the area's most iconic natural landmarks.

The district functions as a relaxed cluster of hotels, inns, restaurants and cafes catering to visitors seeking rest and good food. Local cuisine leans on the bounty of the nearby sea, with fresh fish and shellfish featuring in the ryokan dinners, and there are free public foot baths where day visitors can dip in without committing to a full soak. The atmosphere is easygoing and unpretentious, well suited to families and to travelers using the town as a comfortable base.

That base is a strategic one. Kaike sits close to Yonago, a transport hub for western Tottori, and is well placed for exploring the wider region, from Mount Daisen and its temples to the flower park at Hanakairo, the port town of Sakaiminato with its manga-themed streets, and the shrines and gardens of nearby Matsue and Izumo across the prefectural border. Its beachside setting makes it an appealing place to unwind at the end of a day of sightseeing.

Practically, Kaike Onsen is easy to reach, with its own station on the JR Sanin Main Line a short walk or bus ride from the seafront, and ample facilities for visitors. The district itself is free to wander, with bathing fees varying by hotel or public bath, and the flat coastal streets and promenade are comfortable and accessible for all.
