Yonago Castle Ruins

The Yonago Castle Ruins crown the small hill of Mount Yonago in the city of Yonago, western Tottori, and although the castle's buildings vanished long ago, the site is celebrated for two things: its evocative stone ramparts and one of the finest free panoramic views in the whole San'in region. For travelers willing to make a short climb, it is a genuinely rewarding and little-visited stop.

Yonago Castle was built around the turn of the seventeenth century as an important stronghold guarding the western reaches of the domain, strategically placed near the coast where lake, sea and plain meet. It once boasted a grand multi-story keep and extensive fortifications rising in tiers up the hill, and it served as a key military and administrative center in the early Edo period. As with most Japanese castles, its wooden structures were dismantled after the feudal era ended in the Meiji period, leaving the impressive stonework behind.

Today visitors climb stone-paved paths and steps up through the tiered baileys, passing massive retaining walls, gate foundations and the outlines of vanished palaces and towers. Interpretive signs help reconstruct the castle in the imagination, and the layered ramparts give a strong sense of how the fortress once commanded its surroundings. The grounds double as a park, pleasant with cherry blossoms in spring and warm foliage in autumn, and popular with locals for walks and picnics.

The real prize waits at the summit, where the main keep once stood. From this hilltop a magnificent 360-degree panorama opens out, taking in the graceful cone of Mount Daisen to the east, the shimmering waters of the Sea of Japan and Miho Bay to the north, the lagoon of Lake Nakaumi to the west, and the city spread out below. On a clear day it is one of the great views of western Tottori, and remarkably it costs nothing to enjoy. Sunrise and sunset are especially beautiful from here.

A visit takes around fifty minutes and involves a moderate uphill walk on stone paths and steps, so comfortable shoes are advisable, but the climb is short and manageable for most reasonably active visitors, and the payoff at the top is out of all proportion to the effort. The site is quiet and uncrowded, offering a peaceful encounter with history and scenery away from any tourist bustle.

Practically, the ruins are easy to reach, roughly a twenty-minute walk from Yonago Station, with parking and restrooms nearby at the base. Yonago itself is a useful transport hub for western Tottori, so the castle slots neatly into a day that might also include the seaside hot springs of Kaike, the flower park at Hanakairo, or the sacred slopes of Mount Daisen visible on the horizon.

For travelers, the Yonago Castle Ruins offer atmospheric samurai-era stonework, a lovely seasonal park, and above all a spectacular, sweeping and completely free view over mountain, sea and lake, making them one of the most worthwhile hidden gems in the region.
