Jozenji-dori Avenue

Jozenji-dori is the most beloved street in Sendai and the living emblem of the city's nickname, Mori no Miyako, the 'City of Trees.' This broad central boulevard is lined with magnificent zelkova trees whose branches arch overhead to form a green tunnel in summer, and it embodies the leafy, relaxed character that sets Sendai apart from Japan's other big cities. A stroll here is essential to understanding the place.

Sendai earned its reputation as the City of Trees partly through deliberate design and partly through the greenery the Date lords encouraged in their castle town, and Jozenji-dori is the finest expression of that legacy. Running through the heart of the modern city, the avenue features a wide, park-like central pedestrian promenade separating the traffic lanes, planted with rows of mature zelkova and dotted with sculptures, benches and small fountains. In the warmer months the dense canopy casts cool, dappled shade, and office workers, families and students gather on the promenade to relax, making it a genuine social space rather than merely a thoroughfare.

The street changes character with the seasons and hosts several of Sendai's signature events. In early summer the fresh green is at its most beautiful, and the avenue becomes a venue for the Jozenji Streetjazz Festival, when musicians perform along its length and the whole area fills with music and crowds. Autumn turns the zelkova gold. But the street is most famous of all in December, when it becomes the stage for the Sendai Pageant of Starlight, one of Japan's premier winter illuminations. Hundreds of thousands of tiny lights are wrapped around the bare branches of the zelkova trees, transforming the boulevard into a glittering tunnel of light that draws visitors from across the country and gives the winter city a magical glow.

Beyond its greenery and festivals, Jozenji-dori is a pleasant place to eat, drink and wander. Cafes, restaurants and shops line the avenue and its side streets, and it connects easily to the nearby Kotodai Park and the shopping and nightlife districts of central Sendai. The public art scattered along the promenade, including works by noted sculptors, adds interest to a slow walk.

The avenue is entirely free, flat and fully accessible, open at all hours, with cafes, restrooms and seating close at hand, making it easy to enjoy at any time of day or year. Whether you come to sit in the summer shade, catch a jazz performance, admire the autumn leaves or wander beneath the winter lights, it rewards an unhurried visit.

Getting here could not be easier: the Namboku subway line's Kotodai-koen Station exits directly onto the avenue, and it is only a short walk from Sendai Station and the main downtown arcades. As the green heart of the City of Trees and the home of its most spectacular festivals, Jozenji-dori captures the relaxed, cultured spirit of Sendai better than any single sight, and simply walking its leafy length is one of the city's quiet pleasures.
