Yubara Onsen Sunayu

Sunayu is the celebrated open-air hot spring of Yubara Onsen, set on the bank of the Asahi River in the mountains of Maniwa City in northern Okayama. Fed by natural geothermal water bubbling up through the riverbed gravel, it is one of Japan's best-known free rotenburo, a rustic public bath open to the sky directly beside the flowing river and dramatically overlooked by the great concrete arc of the Yubara Dam. Regularly featured on lists of the country's finest natural hot springs, it offers an experience quite different from the polished indoor baths of a typical resort.

The bath itself is elemental. Several rock-lined pools of varying temperature sit right at the water's edge, filled by mineral-rich hot water that seeps naturally from the ground; because it is a communal, mixed-gender bath in the old tradition, and free to use around the clock, it draws a mix of curious travellers and local regulars. Basic changing facilities and restrooms are provided nearby, but the appeal is precisely its raw, unmanicured setting: soaking in steaming water while the cold river rushes past and the dam rises overhead is a memorably wild kind of onsen.

The surrounding town of Yubara Onsen adds context and comfort. It is a small hot-spring resort with inns, shops, and other baths, so visitors can pair a soak in the free riverside pools with a meal or an overnight stay, and the area serves as a gateway to the wider natural attractions of northern Okayama, including Hiruzen and the region's autumn valleys.

Seasonality strongly shapes the experience. Autumn and winter are the most atmospheric, when cold air makes the rising steam dramatic and the contrast between hot water and chilly surroundings is at its best; a winter soak with snow on the riverbanks is the classic image. Spring and summer are pleasant too, with green mountains and easier travel, though the bath is more exposed in the heat. Water levels and conditions can vary with the river and dam, so it is worth checking locally before a visit.

Sunayu is free and, unusually, open at all hours, with parking and simple facilities nearby. By public transport, buses run from JR Chugoku-Katsuyama Station toward Yubara Onsen and take roughly 30 to 40 minutes, though services are limited; a car via the Yonago Expressway is the most reliable way to reach it and to combine it with other northern Okayama sights. Bathing etiquette still applies even at this casual bath, so wash considerately and be mindful that it is a shared, open space. Allow about an hour for a relaxed soak.
