Unazuki Onsen

Unazuki Onsen is the largest and most celebrated hot-spring resort in Toyama Prefecture, a compact riverside town of ryokan, bathhouses, and craft shops perched at the mouth of the spectacular Kurobe Gorge. Ringed by steep, forested mountains and split by the milky-blue Kurobe River, it serves two roles at once: a relaxing onsen retreat in its own right and the departure point for one of Japan's most thrilling scenic railways.

The town's hot water is famous for its clarity and quality. Piped down from the Kuronagi source higher in the gorge, Unazuki's spring water is remarkably clear and gently alkaline, prized for leaving the skin smooth — a so-called beauty bath. Ryokan large and small offer indoor and open-air baths overlooking the river, and even day visitors can partake: several public baths welcome walk-ins, and a free footbath by the station fountain lets travellers soak tired feet between trains. The resort dates from the early twentieth century, when the hot spring was developed alongside the hydroelectric projects that tamed the Kurobe River, and that engineering heritage is part of its character.

The headline attraction is the Kurobe Gorge Railway, a narrow-gauge line built to service the dams and power stations that now carries sightseers on open-sided trolley trains deep into one of the deepest V-shaped ravines in the country. From the terminus beside the town, the little trains rattle across high bridges and past turquoise pools and steaming riverside baths, and the ride is at its most breathtaking in autumn, when the gorge blazes with red and gold maples in late October and early November. Walking trails, riverside rotenburo, and viewpoints along the line reward those who alight at the intermediate stops.

Unazuki itself is easy and pleasant to explore on foot. Beyond the baths there are lookout points over the gorge mouth, a small museum devoted to the river's history and the story of the great Kurobe Dam upstream, sweet shops selling the local onsen manju, and cafes with river views. The pace is gentle and the scale intimate; an afternoon and an overnight stay let you combine the gorge railway with a long soak and a kaiseki dinner. The town is walkable and undemanding, though the mountain setting means cool evenings even in summer.

Getting there is a scenic journey in itself. The Toyama Chiho Railway runs from central Toyama up the valley to Unazuki-Onsen Station in about ninety minutes, and the Hokuriku Shinkansen's Shin-Kurobe Station connects via the local line. The gorge railway operates roughly from spring through late autumn and closes in winter, so time your visit accordingly. For a blend of soothing hot springs and jaw-dropping mountain scenery, Unazuki Onsen is the finest base in eastern Toyama.
