Kurobe Gorge Railway

The Kurobe Gorge Railway is one of the most scenic train rides in Japan, a narrow-gauge 'torokko' sightseeing line that threads through the deep, dramatic Kurobe Gorge in the mountains of eastern Toyama. Originally built in the early 20th century to service the construction of hydroelectric dams and power stations along the Kurobe River, the little trains once carried only workers and materials; today they carry sightseers on an unforgettable 20-kilometer journey into one of the steepest and most spectacular V-shaped valleys in the country. The line climbs from Unazuki to Keyakidaira, crossing numerous bridges and passing through dozens of tunnels along the way.

The ride is a feast of mountain scenery. The trains inch along ledges cut into the gorge walls, high above the Kurobe River, whose water glows an astonishing emerald and turquoise from dissolved minerals. Deep forests cling to the near-vertical slopes, waterfalls tumble from the heights, and striking red bridges span the chasm at intervals, providing classic photo compositions. The open-sided carriages put passengers directly in the mountain air, with the sound of the river far below and the cliffs rising overhead — a genuinely thrilling way to travel.

Along the roughly 80-minute one-way route, the train stops at several stations that serve as gateways to the gorge's attractions. There are rustic riverside hot springs, including open-air baths reachable only by the train or on foot, walking trails, and viewpoints. Keyakidaira, the terminus, offers dramatic overlooks, a footbridge over the gorge, and more onsen, and is the base for exploring the upper valley. The whole area is a haven for hikers, hot-spring lovers, and photographers.

The railway's season is dictated by the mountains. It operates only from around mid-April to the end of November, closing entirely in winter when heavy snow makes the gorge impassable. Each open season has its highlights: fresh green and rushing snowmelt in spring, cool relief and vivid river colors in summer, and, above all, the autumn foliage season, when the gorge's maples and other trees blaze in reds, oranges, and yellows against the evergreens and the turquoise water, drawing crowds from across Japan. Even in summer the shaded depths of the gorge stay cool, and the open cars can be genuinely chilly, so a jacket is wise; enclosed and premium carriages are available for extra comfort.

Getting there involves a short journey from Toyama: take the Toyama Chiho Railway to Unazukionsen, gateway to a pleasant hot-spring resort town, then walk to the adjacent Unazuki Station to board the torokko train. Because the round trip and stops take several hours, it is best treated as a half- or full-day outing, ideally combined with a soak in Unazuki Onsen afterward.
