Uozu Aquarium

The Uozu Aquarium, on the shore of Toyama Bay in the eastern city of Uozu, holds a special place in Japanese history as the oldest aquarium still in operation, with roots stretching back to 1913. More than a century later it thrives as a modern, family-friendly attraction whose great strength is its focus on a genuinely extraordinary body of water: Toyama Bay, one of the deepest and most biologically rich bays in Japan.

Toyama Bay plunges to more than a thousand metres just offshore, and cold deep-sea currents mingle with warmer surface waters to create a habitat of remarkable diversity. The aquarium makes this its central theme, and its centrepiece is a large Toyama Bay tank spanned by a walk-through acrylic tunnel where sharks, rays, and shoals of local fish glide overhead. Displays introduce the bay's most famous residents, including the firefly squid, or hotaruika, tiny cephalopods that rise to the surface in vast, bioluminescent numbers along the Uozu coast each spring in a phenomenon so spectacular it is designated a natural monument. Deep-sea creatures rarely seen elsewhere, alongside seals, penguins, and interactive touch pools, round out a collection that balances local specialisation with the crowd-pleasers families expect.

Beyond the tanks, the aquarium offers feeding shows, seal and penguin encounters, and hands-on touch experiences that make it especially good for children, while its scientific displays give adults a real appreciation of the bay's ecology and the fishing culture it supports. Because it sits within the seaside Mirage Land park — named for the mirages occasionally visible over Toyama Bay — a visit can easily be combined with the park's Ferris wheel and open coastal views for a full family day out.

The experience is comfortable and undemanding. The aquarium is fully indoors, flat, and accessible, easily enjoyed in a couple of hours, with a shop, cafe, and rest areas on hand. Admission is reasonable for the variety on offer, and while detailed signage is largely in Japanese, the visual appeal of the tanks and the universal charm of the animals transcend language. On a rainy day, in winter, or simply as a break from mountains and temples, it is one of eastern Toyama's most reliable attractions.

Uozu is easily reached by train from Toyama, with the aquarium a short taxi or bus ride from the station toward the coast.
