Hotaruika Museum

Toyama· 1h visit· easy

Namerikawa museum devoted to Toyama Bay's glowing firefly squid, with live tastings in spring.

The Hotaruika Museum in Namerikawa is devoted to one of Toyama Bay's most magical natural spectacles and beloved seasonal delicacies: hotaruika, the firefly squid. Only a few centimetres long, this tiny cephalopod produces a striking blue bioluminescence, and each spring vast numbers rise to the surface of Toyama Bay to spawn, occasionally turning stretches of the shoreline into a glowing blue ribbon at night. The museum — the only one in the world dedicated to firefly squid — celebrates both the biology and the cuisine of this remarkable creature, making it a distinctive stop on any Toyama food itinerary.

Toyama Bay's unusual depth and topography concentrate firefly squid close to shore, and Namerikawa has long been the centre of the fishery. The bay's firefly squid grounds are so significant that they have been designated a national natural monument. At the museum, the highlight of the spring season (roughly March to May) is the live show: in a darkened room, visitors watch real firefly squid glow an ethereal blue in the water, a small but genuinely enchanting sight that photographs rarely do justice. Displays and touch tanks explain the squid's life cycle, its light-producing organs, and the traditional fishing methods used to catch it, while other exhibits cover the wider marine life of the deep bay.

Just as important is the eating. Firefly squid is a prized seasonal food, and the museum and its cafe let visitors taste it at its freshest — boiled and served whole with a tangy miso-vinegar dressing (sunomono), as sashimi, deep-fried, or simmered. Sweet, briny, and faintly rich from the squid's internal organs, it is a flavour intensely associated with Toyama's spring, and sampling it beside the museum that explains it deepens the experience. In season, some visitors also join early pre-dawn boat tours on the bay to watch fishermen haul in the glowing catch, an unforgettable if very early outing.

The museum works for all ages, combining an aquarium-like sense of wonder with clear, accessible exhibits, and its coastal location offers views over the bay toward the Tateyama mountains. Outside the spring firefly-squid season the live glow show is not available, but the displays, cafe, and squid products remain, and admission is lower.

Namerikawa is easily reached on the Ainokaze Toyama Railway, the local line that runs along the coast from Toyama city, with the museum just a short walk from the station; it is not on the JR network, so Japan Rail Pass holders will use the local railway. Timing is everything: to experience the full magic — glowing live squid and the freshest seasonal tastings — aim for spring. For travellers curious about the natural wonders and seasonal flavours of Toyama Bay, the Hotaruika Museum offers a rare combination of science, spectacle, and superb seasonal seafood found almost nowhere else on earth.

A local's tip

Come between March and May to see live firefly squid glow blue in the darkened tanks, and to taste them fresh — boiled, as sashimi, or in sunomono. Book an early-morning bay 'firefly squid' boat tour in season.
