Tohoku History Museum

The Tohoku History Museum, in the town of Tagajo just outside Sendai, is the largest museum of history and archaeology in Miyagi Prefecture and the best single place to understand the deep past of northern Japan. Opened in 1999, it presents the sweep of Tohoku's story - from Stone Age hunter-gatherers through the frontier era of ancient Japan to the modern age - in a spacious, well-designed building beside one of the region's most important archaeological sites.

The JR Tohoku Main Line runs from Sendai to Kokufu-Tagajo Station in about twenty minutes, and the museum stands directly beside the station, a three-minute walk from the exit.
