A vast public fish market near Sendai where you build your own custom seafood rice bowl from around 140 stalls of Sanriku catch.
The Shiogama Seafood Wholesale Market is one of the great food experiences in the Sendai area: a huge, bustling public fish market where you can assemble your own made-to-order seafood rice bowl from a dizzying array of the day's catch. Fun, hands-on and genuinely local, it is a highlight for anyone who loves seafood, and it sits within easy reach of the city.
Shiogama is one of Japan's premier tuna landing ports and a gateway to the rich Sanriku fishing grounds, and the market reflects that abundance. Roughly 140 stalls fill the hall, piled with sashimi-grade tuna, salmon, squid, scallops, sea urchin, salmon roe, whitefish, pickles and dried goods offloaded from the neighboring wharves. Unlike many wholesale markets, this one is fully open to the general public, so ordinary visitors can browse and buy alongside restaurateurs and locals stocking up.
The signature experience is the My Kaisendon Corner, a build-your-own seafood bowl system. You start by buying a bowl of plain sushi rice, then wander the stalls selecting whatever toppings you fancy, a slice of fatty tuna here, a heap of salmon roe there, some sweet scallop or briny sea urchin, and pile them onto the rice to create a kaisendon that is exactly to your taste and budget. There is a seating area where you can add soy sauce and wasabi and eat your creation. Because you choose every ingredient, no two bowls are alike, and the freshness, straight from the market floor, is hard to match at any restaurant.
The atmosphere is the other half of the appeal: the shouts of vendors, the gleaming displays of fish on ice, the smell of the sea, and the cheerful chaos of visitors comparing bowls. It is an unpolished, authentic slice of coastal Tohoku life rather than a manicured tourist attraction, which is exactly what makes it memorable. Miyagi's celebrated oysters and other shellfish also appear here, so seafood lovers can graze well beyond the rice bowl.
Practically, entry is free and you spend only on what you eat or buy, so it is flexible for any budget. There are restrooms and seating, some signage and help in English, and cash is the safest way to pay across the many small stalls. Note the market's hours carefully: it opens very early, closes in the early afternoon, and is shut on Wednesdays, and you must order your rice at the My Kaisendon Corner up to an hour before closing, so this is firmly a morning-to-midday outing.
Any season works, since the market runs year-round, though autumn and winter bring some of the region's finest shellfish, including its famous oysters. Arrive early for the widest choice and the liveliest atmosphere.
To get there from Sendai Station, take the JR Senseki Line to Higashi-Shiogama Station, about a 30-minute ride, then walk roughly 15 minutes toward the harbor to 1-20-74 Shinhamacho. The trip is covered by a Japan Rail Pass, and the market pairs beautifully with a visit to the nearby Urakasumi brewery and Shiogama Shrine for a full day of eating and sightseeing around the bay.
A local's tip
Buy a bowl of plain rice at the My Kaisendon Corner first, then walk the stalls adding sashimi toppings to build your own custom seafood bowl; come early for the best selection and order rice at least an hour before closing.
