Sera Kogen Farm

High on the cool plateau of Sera in the heart of Hiroshima Prefecture, Sera Kogen Farm is one of western Japan's great flower parks, a sweeping expanse of cultivated hillside that reinvents itself in a blaze of colour with every passing season. At around 500 metres of altitude the climate is fresh even in summer, and the farm uses its long growing season to stage a near-continuous succession of spectacular flower displays across meadows that roll toward the surrounding mountains.

The show begins in spring, when hundreds of thousands of tulips in every conceivable colour carpet the fields, followed by drifts of shibazakura moss phlox and fields of scarlet and orange poppies. High summer brings the farm's signature spectacle: an ocean of sunflowers, well over a million of them, all turning their faces toward the light across the open highland. Then in autumn the farm reaches its most dazzling with a celebrated dahlia festival, in which thousands of dahlias of hundreds of named varieties bloom in intricate patterns beside late sunflowers and cosmos, drawing photographers from across the region.

Beyond the flowers, Sera Kogen Farm is designed as a full family day out. There are gentle walking paths and viewing rises that let you look out over the patterned fields, a restaurant and cafe serving dishes made with local highland produce, and shops selling flowers, bulbs, jams and ice cream. Children can meet farm animals and enjoy open space to run, and the wide skies and clean mountain air make even a simple picnic feel like a small holiday. Because everything is arranged for accessibility, with broad level paths and ample parking, it suits visitors of all ages and abilities.

The Sera highlands are dotted with several flower and fruit farms, and the area has built a reputation as a flower-touring destination, with pick-your-own fruit orchards nearby offering grapes, pears and blueberries in season. Sera Kogen Farm is the largest and best known of these, and its changing calendar means that no two visits are quite alike; regulars return in different months to catch each successive bloom at its peak.

The farm lies well inland, away from the rail network, so the practical way to reach it is by car, roughly forty minutes north of Fukuyama or Onomichi through pretty mountain country. During the busiest flower seasons, particularly the spring tulips and autumn dahlias, seasonal direct buses run from Fukuyama Station, but schedules are limited, so check ahead. Admission varies with the season and the flowers on show, typically around a thousand yen or more at peak. Time your trip to one of the headline displays, wear comfortable shoes for the grassy slopes, and bring a camera, because on a fine day the sight of a whole hillside in bloom beneath the highland sky is genuinely unforgettable.
