Saiko Wild Bird Forest Park

The Saiko Wild Bird Forest Park, or Saiko Yacho-no-Mori Koen, is a spacious and peaceful public park on the western side of Lake Sai, one of the quieter of the Fuji Five Lakes. Set against the backdrop of the Aokigahara forest and the great cone of Mount Fuji rising beyond, it combines flower gardens, walking paths, an aviary and interpretive facilities into a relaxed nature destination that makes a welcome contrast to the busier attractions around Lake Kawaguchi. Best of all, entry to the grounds is free, and the park offers one of the finest unobstructed views of Mount Fuji in the whole area.

As its name suggests, the park was created with an emphasis on birdlife. It includes a large walk-through aviary and observation facilities where visitors can see and learn about the wild birds native to the forests and wetlands around Mount Fuji, and the surrounding woodland and gardens attract wild species throughout the year, making it a rewarding spot for birdwatchers. Nature-centre displays explain the local ecology, the volcanic landscape and the plants and animals that thrive on the lava terrain, giving families and curious visitors an accessible introduction to the environment of the Fuji foothills.

The park is also known for its seasonal flowers. Broad lawns and flower beds are planted to bloom in succession through the year, with a spring display of shibazakura (moss phlox) carpeting the ground in pink, summer greenery, and autumn colour among the trees. The open, well-tended grounds frame Mount Fuji beautifully, and the combination of foreground flowers, the shining lake and the snow-streaked peak beyond makes the park a favourite of photographers seeking a classic Fuji composition without the crowds of the northern shore viewpoints.

In winter the park hosts a popular seasonal illumination known as the Jukai (Sea of Trees) event, when the grounds are decorated with lights during the cold months, drawing visitors after dark to a display set against the silhouette of the mountain. There is a cafe and rest facilities on site, and ample free parking for those arriving by car, while the layout of gentle paths makes it comfortable for all ages and abilities to explore at an easy pace.

Because Lake Sai is less developed than Lake Kawaguchi and Lake Yamanaka, the whole area retains a calm, natural feel, and the park shares in that tranquillity. A visit of an hour or so allows time to walk the grounds, visit the aviary, enjoy the view and rest at the cafe, and it pairs naturally with the nearby lava caves, the Aokigahara nature trails and the recreated thatched village of Saiko Iyashi-no-Sato Nenba on the same lake.

The park is reached by the Fujikyu Saiko sightseeing bus (the Green Line) that loops around Lake Sai from Kawaguchiko Station, stopping close to the entrance.
