Mount Shiude (Shiudeyama)

Mount Shiude, or Shiudeyama, is a modest peak on the Shonai peninsula near Mitoyo in western Kagawa, but it commands one of the most celebrated panoramas in all of the Seto Inland Sea. From its 352-metre summit the view sweeps across a maze of green islands scattered over the calm silver water, and in cherry-blossom season, when sakura frames the foreground against that island-studded backdrop, it becomes one of the most photographed spring viewpoints in Japan.

The magic of Shiudeyama is the combination of elevation and setting. The Seto Inland Sea here is dense with islands of every size, and from the summit they layer into the distance in soft blue-grey silhouettes, the whole scene often hazed with the gentle light that makes this sea so beloved by Japanese artists. Ferries and fishing boats trace lines across the water, and on clear days the view stretches far toward Okayama on the mainland and the great bridges spanning the sea. It is a viewpoint that rewards simply standing and looking, at any time of year.

But spring is when Shiudeyama becomes truly famous. The summit and its slopes are planted with cherry trees, and for a brief window in early April they burst into bloom, hanging clouds of pale pink blossom directly in front of the panorama of islands and sea. Photographers come from across the country to capture the classic composition — sakura in the foreground, the Inland Sea and its islands behind — and the spot is regularly featured in lists of Japan's finest cherry-blossom views. Sunset and the soft light of early morning are especially magical, and autumn brings its own quieter beauty as the surrounding hills colour.

Reaching the top involves a little effort, which keeps the summit from feeling overrun. A car park near the top and walking trails give access; many visitors drive or taxi most of the way and walk the final stretch to the observation area, while more energetic hikers climb from lower trailheads. The paths are moderate, so sensible footwear helps, and there are restrooms and viewing decks at the top. During the cherry-blossom peak the access road and parking can be busy, so arriving early is wise.

Mount Shiude sits in the scenic, often-overlooked Mitoyo-Kanonji corner of Kagawa, and it combines beautifully with the region's other natural highlights. Pair it with the 'mirror beach' of Chichibugahama and the giant Zenigata Sunae sand coin at Kotohiki Park for a full day of western Kagawa scenery, ideally timed so the summit blossom and a Chichibugahama sunset fall on the same spring day. Getting there suits drivers best; the nearest railhead is Takuma Station on the JR Yosan Line, from which a taxi or car completes the trip. Allow around 90 minutes for the ascent, the viewpoint and photography. For the unforgettable blossom-and-islands scene, aim for the first week or two of April and check local bloom forecasts before you travel.
