Chichibugahama Beach

Chichibugahama is a long, shallow beach on the Mitoyo coast of western Kagawa, near the city of Kanonji, that has become one of Shikoku's most photographed natural attractions. Its fame rests on a simple but magical coincidence of geography and timing: when the tide retreats it leaves a vast, glassy sheet of water lying over flat wet sand, and when that happens at sunset the whole beach becomes an enormous mirror, reflecting the flaming sky and the silhouettes of visitors as perfectly as still water. The effect has earned it comparisons to Bolivia's Salar de Uyuni, and it draws photographers from across Japan and beyond.

The science behind the spectacle is the exceptionally gentle gradient of the beach, which allows the outgoing tide to leave a wide, wafer-thin film of water rather than draining away completely. Stand at the water's edge as the sun sinks and the sea, sky and sand merge into a single luminous plane; a jump, a silhouette or a reflected figure produces the mirror-image photographs the beach is famous for. Locals and visitors experiment with poses, props and long exposures, and the mood as the crowd waits for the light is convivial and expectant.

Crucially, the mirror only appears when two conditions align: low tide and sunset. Both times shift daily, so a little planning is essential — tide timetables and sunset times are published locally and often posted near the beach, and the best sessions are advertised in advance. Arrive at high tide or midday and you will find a pleasant but ordinary beach; arrive as the tide bottoms out under a colourful evening sky and you may witness something unforgettable. Clear, calm evenings with a little cloud to catch the colour are ideal.

Beyond the sunset spectacle, Chichibugahama is a relaxed, family-friendly stretch of coast. The long sandy beach is good for a stroll at any time, there are restrooms and parking, and a scattering of stylish cafes and eateries has grown up nearby to serve the steady flow of visitors — pairing a coffee or a meal with the wait for sunset is part of the experience. The beach is popular in summer for swimming and paddling too, though it is the evening light that makes it special.

Getting there suits a western Kagawa day trip. The nearest station is Motoyama on the JR Yosan Line near Kanonji, from where a taxi or rental car reaches the beach; drivers will find it an easy stop. Allow around an hour around the sunset window, arriving with time to find your spot and staying until the colour fades. Chichibugahama combines beautifully with other Kanonji-Mitoyo sights such as the giant Zenigata Sunae sand coin at nearby Kotohiki Park and the island-strewn viewpoint of Mount Shiude. For the classic mirror photograph, plan your visit around a low tide that coincides with sunset, bring a wide-angle lens or phone, and be ready for wet feet.
