Mount Iino (Sanuki Fuji)

Rising in an almost perfect cone from the flat Sanuki plain between Marugame and Sakaide, Mount Iino is so shapely that it has long been nicknamed Sanuki Fuji, the Fuji of Kagawa. Its graceful, symmetrical form is a landmark visible for miles across the region and a beloved symbol of the local landscape. At just over four hundred metres, it is modest in height but commanding in presence, and its summit delivers one of the finest all-round viewpoints in western Kagawa, taking in the coast, the plain and the great bridge to Honshu.

The mountain is one of the most popular hikes in the prefecture, precisely because it is so approachable. A well-graded spiral trail winds around the cone to the top, climbing steadily but gently through woodland, and most walkers reach the summit in around an hour. The path is well maintained and family-friendly, making Iino a favourite for local hikers, morning-exercise regulars and visitors wanting a rewarding climb without technical difficulty. Benches and viewpoints along the way give reasons to pause and enjoy the widening scenery.

From the summit the panorama is expansive and memorable. The Sanuki plain stretches out below, dotted with the rounded hills so typical of Kagawa, while to the north the Seto Inland Sea shines and the Great Seto Bridge, one of the world's longest bridge systems, sweeps across the water toward Honshu. On clear autumn and winter days the visibility is superb, the crisp air revealing the bridge, the islands and distant mountains in sharp detail. A small shrine at the top adds a touch of the sacred to the achievement of the climb.

The mountain changes beautifully with the seasons. Cherry blossom softens the lower slopes in spring, fresh green clothes it through summer, and autumn brings warm colour to the trail-side trees, so the hike is enjoyable for much of the year. Because the trail loops around the cone, the views shift as you climb, offering fresh outlooks over the plain and sea from different angles, which keeps the ascent engaging from bottom to top.

Access is straightforward. Mount Iino stands close to several stations on the JR Yosan Line between Marugame and Sakaide, with trailheads a short walk or taxi ride away and parking for those arriving by car. The climb requires only ordinary fitness and decent shoes, and free to enjoy at any hour. For travellers who want to stretch their legs and be rewarded with a classic Setouchi panorama, the iconic cone of Sanuki Fuji is one of the most satisfying viewpoints in the Takamatsu region.
