Matsue Vogel Park

Matsue Vogel Park is a lavish flower-and-bird park spread across a hilltop on the north shore of Lake Shinji, and it is one of the most enjoyable family attractions on the entire San'in coast. Vogel is the German word for bird, and the park lives up to the name with a huge population of birds from around the world, but its real magic lies in the seamless combination of birds, flowers and sweeping lake views, much of it under cover so that the experience is just as rewarding in rain, wind or the region's grey winter as on a bright summer day.

The heart of the park is a pair of enormous greenhouses, among the largest of their kind, where thousands of begonias, fuchsias and other blossoms hang in cascades of colour throughout the entire year. Walking beneath curtains of flowers in full bloom, regardless of the season outside, is a genuinely dreamlike experience and a photographer's paradise. The climate-controlled halls keep the park comfortable in any weather, a real asset in a region known for changeable skies.

The bird collection is equally impressive and unusually interactive. Owls, hawks, falcons, penguins, toucans, hornbills, waterfowl and many other species live here, and daily shows let visitors watch owls and birds of prey fly close overhead, feed penguins, and meet birds up close under the guidance of keepers. Children and adults alike can hold or feed certain birds, turning a stroll into a hands-on encounter that leaves a lasting impression. The mix of free-flight demonstrations and walk-through aviaries makes the park lively and engaging rather than a passive zoo visit.

The setting completes the appeal. Perched above Lake Shinji, the park offers wide views over the water, which is famed across Japan for its spectacular sunsets. On a clear evening the combination of flower-filled greenhouses, exotic birds and a glowing lake horizon is hard to beat. Landscaped outdoor paths, a restaurant and a shop round out a visit that can easily fill two hours or more, especially with children in tow.

Access is refreshingly simple: the park has its own station, Matsue Vogel Park, right at the entrance on the Ichibata Railway, the private line that runs along the lake between Matsue Shinjiko Onsen and Izumo. This makes it an easy stop on the scenic rail journey between Matsue and the great shrine of Izumo Taisha, and drivers will find ample parking. Note that as a private railway, the Ichibata line is not covered by the Japan Rail Pass.
