LaLaport Fukuoka (Gundam SIDE-F)

Fukuoka· 2.5h visit· easy

A large modern shopping mall famous for its towering 24.8-metre life-size RX-93ff ν Gundam statue and Gundam SIDE-F attraction.

LaLaport Fukuoka is one of the city's newest large-scale shopping and entertainment malls, opened in 2022, and it has become a magnet for visitors thanks to a single spectacular draw: the towering life-size RX-93ff ν Gundam statue that stands guard outside. For anime fans it is an essential pilgrimage, and for families and shoppers it is a polished, all-in-one destination in the south of the city.

The statue is the undisputed star. Standing about 24.8 metres tall, this full-scale ν Gundam — a design created specifically for Fukuoka — is one of only a handful of giant Gundam statues in Japan and the largest of its kind, an imposing white-and-blue mecha that dominates the mall's plaza. Several times a day, and most impressively after dark, the figure comes alive in a free light-and-sound performance, moving its head, deploying effects and glowing against the night sky to a soundtrack that thrills crowds of onlookers. Simply standing beneath it, dwarfed by the machine, is a genuine wow moment.

Adjoining the statue is GUNDAM SIDE-F, an official complex combining a large Gundam-brand store — stocked with Gunpla model kits, figures and exclusive merchandise — with photo spots and interactive experiences dedicated to the long-running franchise. Between the statue outside and SIDE-F within, LaLaport offers the most complete Gundam experience in western Japan, and the mall leans into its pop-culture identity with related events and displays.

Beyond the Gundam, LaLaport Fukuoka is a modern regional mall of the Mitsui 'LaLaport' brand, with a broad mix of fashion, lifestyle and homeware stores, a large food court and sit-down restaurants, a cinema, and family-friendly amenities that make it easy to spend several hours. Seasonal decorations, character pop-ups and event spaces keep it lively, and its scale means there is plenty to browse whether or not you care about giant robots.

The mall's location in the Naka ward puts it a short hop from the centre: it is roughly a nine-minute walk from Takeshita Station, just one stop from Hakata Station on the JR Kagoshima Line, with direct buses from Hakata Bus Terminal for added convenience. Entry to the mall and views of the exterior statue are free, with only certain Gundam attractions ticketed, so it works equally well as a quick photo stop or a longer shopping-and-entertainment outing. As a bright, contemporary showcase of Japan's pop-culture power — anchored by an unforgettable robot — LaLaport Fukuoka is one of the city's most crowd-pleasing modern attractions.
