Kumoba Pond

Kumoba Pond, often called Swan Lake by the foreign residents who have summered in Karuizawa for generations, is one of the loveliest and most peaceful spots in this genteel highland resort. Set among cool larch and birch woodland a short distance from the town centre, the small pond is fed by clear groundwater and ringed by a gentle walking trail, and it has become one of the most photographed natural scenes in Nagano, especially when the surrounding forest catches fire with autumn colour.

The pond's fame rests above all on its reflections. On a still morning the water lies utterly flat, mirroring the trees and sky so perfectly that photographs are hard to tell which way up they should be. In mid to late October, when the maples, larches and other hardwoods around the shore turn to shades of crimson, orange and gold, the doubled image of the blazing foliage in the motionless water is spectacular, drawing photographers who arrive at dawn to catch the light and the low mist rising off the surface. Spring and summer bring fresh greens and the cool, dappled shade that has long made Karuizawa a refuge from the heat, while even winter has a stark charm when frost rimes the reeds.

A flat loop trail circles the pond in about 20 minutes, threading through the trees and crossing small wooden bridges, with benches and quiet corners inviting you to sit and take in the calm. The walk is easy and suitable for all ages, and because the pond is compact the whole visit can be as short or as leisurely as you like. Local legend and the Swan Lake nickname add a touch of romance, and the reflective water genuinely lives up to the billing.

Kumoba Pond sits within easy reach of Karuizawa's other attractions and makes a natural addition to a day spent exploring the resort. Many visitors combine it with the old Karuizawa Ginza shopping street, the historic churches and villas that recall the town's history as a summer retreat for missionaries, writers and the imperial family, and the spring-fed Shiraito Falls in the hills to the north. Cycling is one of the great pleasures of Karuizawa, and rented bicycles are a popular and pleasant way to reach the pond along shaded forest lanes.

Access is very easy. Karuizawa is only about an hour from Tokyo on the Hokuriku Shinkansen, and Kumoba Pond lies roughly 25 minutes on foot from the station, or a few minutes by taxi or bicycle. There is limited parking nearby for those arriving by car.
