Kitakaro is one of Hokkaido's most beloved confectioners, and its flagship Sapporo store occupies one of the city centre's loveliest buildings — a restored red-brick structure near the old Hokkaido Government Office that once served as a prefectural library. The pairing of celebrated sweets and gracious architecture makes the Honkan far more than a souvenir stop; it is a genuine destination for anyone with a sweet tooth or an eye for handsome interiors.

Founded in the town of Ikeda in eastern Hokkaido, Kitakaro built its reputation on ingredients from the island's rich farmland — dairy butter, cream, eggs and wheat — and its signature products lean on that quality. The best known is the baumkuchen, a layered ring cake baked slowly on a rotating spit until the exterior is delicately caramelised; here it is often sold still warm from the oven. Equally famous are the shop's cream puffs, their choux shells filled to order with a light custard-cream so the pastry stays crisp, and a range of biscuits, senbei and seasonal confections that make ideal gifts.

The real pleasure is to buy a treat downstairs and carry it up to the café on the building's upper floor, a bright, high-ceilinged room lined with bookshelves in a nod to the site's former life as a library. There you can sit with a coffee and freshly baked cake amid restored woodwork and tall windows — an unhurried, distinctly civilised way to pass an afternoon in the middle of a busy city. The café menu changes with the seasons and includes soft-serve ice cream made with Hokkaido milk that is worth ordering on its own.

Because it sits in the government-office district a short walk from Odori Park and subway station, the Honkan is easy to combine with the neighbouring red-brick landmarks and the central sightseeing route. It functions equally well as a quick souvenir run — Kitakaro's boxed sweets travel well and are a reliable gift to bring home — or as a leisurely coffee break between other stops.

Prices are reasonable for the quality, and the staff are used to visitors; English is limited but the goods are displayed clearly and sampling is often offered. Open through the day and into the early evening, the shop suits both morning and afternoon visits, though the café is at its most pleasant mid-afternoon.
