Ishiura Shrine

Kanazawa· 0.4h visit· easy

Said to be Kanazawa's oldest shrine, with a photogenic tunnel of vermilion torii and a reputation for matchmaking, right beside Kenroku-en.

Ishiura Shrine claims the distinction of being the oldest shrine in Kanazawa, with a history said to stretch back more than 1,500 years to the era before the city itself existed. That deep antiquity, combined with its perfect location beside Kenroku-en Garden and the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, makes it an easy and rewarding stop on almost any Kanazawa itinerary.

According to tradition the shrine was founded in the Kofun period, long before the Maeda lords arrived, when this area was open countryside. Over the centuries it has been rebuilt and reconsecrated many times, and it came to be regarded as a guardian shrine of the wider Kanazawa area. Today it enshrines deities associated with matchmaking and good relationships, and it has become a popular spot for people praying for love, marriage and harmonious ties - a reputation that gives the small shrine a cheerful, welcoming energy.

The shrine's signature sight is its striking tunnel of vermilion torii gates. A path lined with around one hundred closely spaced red gates leads through the grounds, creating the kind of corridor of colour usually associated with Kyoto's Fushimi Inari, but at an intimate scale and without the crowds. It is one of the most photographed spots in central Kanazawa and especially beautiful when framed by cherry blossom or autumn leaves. The shrine leans gently into its popularity with charming touches, including a round-faced good-luck mascot and cute amulets that appeal to younger visitors.

A notable detail is how comfortably the ancient and the contemporary sit side by side here: step out of the shrine's timeless torii tunnel and you are directly across the road from one of Japan's most celebrated modern art museums, with Kenroku-en's classical landscape garden just beyond. Few places capture Kanazawa's blend of tradition and creativity so neatly within a single block.

The visiting experience is easy and pleasant. The grounds are compact and largely flat, making them accessible to most visitors, and there is a shrine office where you can buy charms and collect a goshuin seal. Because of its central position the shrine can be busy at midday, so an earlier visit rewards you with quieter photos. Entry is free and the grounds are open at all hours, with staffed hours during the day.

Spring and autumn are the standout seasons, when blossom and koyo colour surround the red gates, but the shrine is worthwhile year-round and pairs naturally with the major sights on its doorstep. A sensible route is to combine Ishiura Shrine with Kenroku-en, Kanazawa Castle Park and the 21st Century Museum in a single half-day, all within a few minutes' walk of each other. From Kanazawa Station the Loop Bus reaches the Kenrokuen area in about twelve minutes.

A local's tip

Look for the little round 'kimatama' good-luck charms shaped like the shrine's mascot - and walk the tunnel of 100 vermilion torii for the photo everyone comes for.

Getting there
