Hiroshima Children's Museum

Hiroshima· 1.5h visit· easy

A free hands-on science museum with a planetarium in Central Park, perfect for families.

The Hiroshima Children's Museum, officially the Hiroshima City Children's Culture and Science Museum, is a free, hands-on science centre in Central Park that has been entertaining and quietly educating local families for decades. Alongside the neighbouring Hiroshima Museum of Art and Hiroshima Castle, it turns the green heart of the city into an easy cluster of things to do, and for travellers with children it is one of the most useful stops in Hiroshima.

The appeal is simple: almost everything is interactive, and general admission costs nothing. Across several floors the exhibits invite kids to pedal, pull, build and experiment their way through the basics of physics, mechanics, electricity, sound and light. There are giant soap-bubble stations, gears and pulleys to work, illusions to puzzle over, construction and building-block zones, and playful displays that turn abstract science into something you do with your hands rather than read on a wall. Younger children have space to roam and tinker safely, while older ones can dig into the more demanding puzzles, so a wide age range stays happily occupied.

The crown of the building is its planetarium, which projects the night sky and runs regular shows on the constellations, the seasons and space exploration. It carries a small separate charge, typically around 510 yen for adults with children cheaper, and shows run to a fixed timetable, so it is worth checking the schedule when you arrive and planning your visit around a screening. Sitting back under the dome as the lights dim and the stars appear is a lovely, restful contrast to the busy exhibit floors.

Because it is free to enter, the museum is ideal for a flexible, low-commitment visit; you can drop in for an hour to escape rain or summer heat, or make an afternoon of it. It is fully accessible with lifts and wheelchairs, and has restrooms and a small shop. Signage leans toward Japanese, but the exhibits are so intuitive and physical that a language barrier rarely matters, which is exactly what makes it work for visiting families.

The location could hardly be more convenient. It sits within Central Park, a short walk from the Kamiyacho tram stops and the Hiroshima Bus Center, and close to Hiroshima Castle and the Peace Memorial Park. A natural plan is to balance a morning at the more sombre Peace Park with an afternoon here, letting children burn off energy and rediscover a sense of wonder among the bubbles and stars. Reach it by Hiroden tram from Hiroshima Station, tap through with an IC card, and you have an easy, budget-friendly stop that keeps the youngest travellers smiling while the adults enjoy the surrounding park and museums.

A local's tip

General admission is free, so drop in even for an hour; pay the small extra fee only for the planetarium show, which runs to a timetable, and check show times as you arrive.
