Heavens Sonohara (Fujimidai Highland)

Heavens Sonohara is a mountain resort on the Fujimidai Highland above Achi village in southern Nagano, and it has built its reputation on one remarkable asset: the sky. Achi, nestled deep among the mountains of the Ina valley with clear, dark air and little light pollution, was ranked by Japan's Ministry of the Environment as the best place in the country for star observation, and Heavens Sonohara turned that distinction into an experience, running guided night tours of the starry sky since 2012.\n\nThe highland viewing area sits at around 1,400 metres and is reached by a long ropeway gondola that climbs from the base station near Hirugami Onsen, itself a well-known hot-spring village. The ride up, roughly a quarter of an hour, is scenic in its own right, lifting visitors above the forested slopes to open highland terrain. By day the summit area offers wide views over the Central Alps and surrounding ranges, with walking paths, a café and family-friendly facilities.\n\nIt is after dark that the place comes into its own. On night-tour evenings, held on most nights from spring through autumn, the gondola runs after sunset to carry visitors up to the highland, where the lights are dimmed and a guided programme introduces the constellations, planets and, on the clearest nights, the faint band of the Milky Way arching overhead. For city dwellers used to a handful of visible stars, the density of the sky here can be genuinely startling, and the experience has made Heavens Sonohara one of the signature 'starry sky' destinations in Japan.\n\nThe highland is not only about night skies. In the cool early mornings of autumn it frequently sits above a 'sea of clouds', with white cloud filling the valleys below and peaks rising like islands, a phenomenon the resort also programmes special early gondola runs to catch. Through the green season the surrounding slopes offer flowers and fresh greenery, and autumn brings foliage to the lower mountainsides, so the ropeway ride changes character with the calendar.\n\nBecause so much of the appeal is weather-dependent, a little planning pays off. Clear, dry, moonless nights give the best stargazing, while still autumn dawns after a humid night favour the sea of clouds; the resort publishes conditions and tour schedules, and it is wise to check before travelling and, for popular night tours, to reserve in advance. The highland is markedly colder than the valley, especially at night, so warm layers are essential even in summer, and a blanket is welcome for lying back to watch the stars.\n\nAccess is easiest by car to the base station in Achi, with the ropeway handling the climb; the nearest rail access is the Iida area on the JR Iida Line, from which the resort is a further drive. Combined with a stay at Hirugami Onsen, Heavens Sonohara makes an easy and memorable overnight trip, pairing a soak in the hot springs with a night under some of the clearest skies in Japan.
