Furusato Forest Park (Cowbell Hill)

Furusato Forest Park sits on high ground near the Shinji interchange of the San'in Expressway, on the far western edge of Matsue where the city meets the Izumo plain. It is a large, wooded recreation park with cabins, a campground and walking trails, and at its heart is a first observation deck nicknamed Cowbell Hill, which gives one of the best sweeping views over Lake Shinji and the plain beyond.

From Cowbell Hill the panorama opens westward across a classic Izumo landscape. In the foreground and middle distance lies the flat, fertile Izumo plain, famous for its tsuiji-matsu, the tall pine windbreaks planted in rows around farmhouses to shield them from the winds off the Sea of Japan, a distinctive feature of the countryside here. Beyond stretch the waters of Lake Shinji, the Kitayama range along its northern shore, and, on clear days, the Izumo Enmusubi Airport out on the plain. It is a broad, restful composition of lake, farmland and hills that captures the character of the region.

Being set among forest, the park is as much a place to spend time as a viewpoint. Trails wind through the trees, there are cabins and camping facilities for overnight stays, and the wooded surroundings bring fresh green in spring and summer and warm colour in autumn. That makes it especially suited to travellers who want to slow down, walk in nature and enjoy the view at leisure rather than simply snap a photo and move on.

As a viewpoint Cowbell Hill is easy to reach and enjoy, with the deck only a short walk from the main car park and restrooms and facilities on site, so it suits families and casual visitors. The elevation and open western aspect mean it holds the afternoon light well, and staying into the evening can reward you with a fine sunset over the plain and lake, one of the advantages of a park where you can also spend the night.

The most rewarding conditions are clear, dry days when the long view to the lake and airport is sharp, and the hours from late afternoon into sunset for the warmest colour. Spring through autumn offers the most comfortable weather, with the forest at its best; autumn in particular adds foliage to the scene.

Getting there is easiest by car, as the park lies on high ground just off the expressway near the Shinji interchange. Using the train, JR Shinji Station on the San'in Main Line is the nearest railhead, from which it is a short taxi ride or drive of about ten minutes up to the park, with Cowbell Hill a brief walk from the car park. For visitors exploring the western side of the Matsue and Izumo area, Furusato Forest Park offers a green, uncrowded retreat and a signature view of the plain's pine-ringed farmland and the shining expanse of Lake Shinji.
