Chureito Pagoda (Arakura Fuji Sengen Shrine)

The Chureito Pagoda is arguably the single most photographed viewpoint of Mount Fuji, delivering a composition that has become shorthand for Japan itself: a vermilion five-storied pagoda in the foreground, cherry blossoms or autumn maples framing the middle ground, and the snow-capped cone of Fuji rising behind. It stands on the wooded hillside of Arakurayama Sengen Park, part of the Arakura Fuji Sengen Shrine above the town of Fujiyoshida.

Despite its timeless appearance, the pagoda is relatively modern. It was completed in 1963 as a peace memorial dedicated to the town's war dead, built as an annex to the Arakura Fuji Sengen Shrine, whose own origins trace back over a thousand years to the early Heian period, when it was founded to pray for calm against Mount Fuji's eruptions. The pagoda sits about 650 metres above sea level, high enough to lift the eye over the town rooftops to the mountain beyond.

Reaching it is part of the experience. From the shrine's main hall at the base, a staircase of roughly 400 stone steps climbs the forested slope. At the top a purpose-built viewing terrace spreads the classic panorama before you. The scene is spectacular year-round but reaches its peak in mid-April, when around 650 Yoshino cherry trees blossom across the hillside, and again in mid-November, when the maples turn crimson and gold. A notable fact: the view became a global phenomenon largely through social media and travel photography in the 2010s, transforming a quiet local memorial into a bucket-list destination.

Visitors should come prepared for the climb. The stone steps are steep and can be slippery in rain or frost, and there is no elevator, so the terrace itself is not wheelchair accessible, though a road partway up the hill shortens the ascent for those who drive. The park is otherwise free and open at all hours, restrooms and parking are available at the base, and a small torii gate marks the shrine approach. Crowds gather heavily during blossom season, when a timed pace and patience are rewarded.

Seasons transform the view completely. Spring's cherry blossoms are the headline event, but autumn's fiery maples offer an equally striking, less crowded alternative. Winter strips the trees bare yet often yields the crispest, clearest views of a heavily snow-covered Fuji, while summer greenery softens the scene. Whatever the season, early morning brings the best light and the thinnest crowds, and a clear day is essential, so it pays to check the forecast before committing.

Getting there is simple once you reach the region. From Kawaguchiko Station, ride the private Fujikyuko Line one stop toward Otsuki to Shimoyoshida Station, then walk about 10 minutes to the shrine entrance before tackling the steps. Note the Fujikyuko Line is not covered by the Japan Rail Pass, though IC cards are accepted. Local buses from Kawaguchiko and Fujisan stations also stop nearby, and drivers will find a car park close to the shrine base.
