Alps Azumino National Government Park

The Alps Azumino National Government Park (Kokuei Alps Azumino Koen) is a sprawling, beautifully landscaped park spread across the gentle slopes at the foot of the Northern Alps in Azumino. One of Japan's national government parks, it is designed as a year-round destination for families and nature lovers, combining broad seasonal flower fields, clear alpine-fed streams, woodland walks and open lawns with the ever-present backdrop of the snow-capped Alps rising behind.

The park is divided into distinct areas that showcase the character of Azumino, a region famous for its pure snowmelt water. Streams and ponds run through the grounds, and the clean water is celebrated with waterside play areas that delight children in summer. Elsewhere the park unfolds as rolling flower meadows that change with the calendar: tulips and other spring blooms carpet the fields in April and May, cosmos and summer flowers follow, and autumn brings buckwheat blossoms and colouring foliage. Rural-landscape zones recreate the traditional satoyama countryside of Nagano, with thatched buildings and terraced plots.

Because it is a national park facility, the grounds are large and immaculately maintained, with paved paths, rental cycles, a café and ample restrooms, making it exceptionally family-friendly and accessible to visitors of all ages and mobility levels. There is enough space that even on busy days it rarely feels crowded, and the Alps views give almost every corner a dramatic natural frame.

A highlight that has made the park increasingly popular is its winter illumination. From late autumn into winter, the grounds are decorated with hundreds of thousands of lights, turning the meadows and trees into one of central Japan's loveliest seasonal light displays — a warm counterpoint to the cold Alps nights. Seasonal events, flower festivals and workshops run throughout the year, so the programme is always changing.

The visiting experience is relaxed and open-ended. Visitors come to picnic on the lawns, cycle the paths, let children play in the water zones, photograph the flower fields against the mountains, or simply stroll in the clean Azumino air. It pairs naturally with the region's other draws — the Daio Wasabi Farm, Hotaka Shrine and the art museums of Azumino — for a full day exploring one of Nagano's most scenic rural corners.

Each season offers something different: spring for tulips and cherry blossom, summer for water play and green meadows, autumn for cosmos and koyo, and winter for the illuminations and snow-framed Alps. Opening hours vary by season and the park closes on some Mondays, so it is worth checking before visiting. Access is via JR Hotaka Station on the Oito Line, a short taxi or seasonal shuttle ride from the park entrances in the Horigane-Hotaka area.
