Asia's only Harry Potter studio tour - walk the real Great Hall, Diagon Alley and Forbidden Forest sets on the former Toshimaen site.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo - The Making of Harry Potter opened in June 2023 on the site of the old Toshimaen amusement park in Nerima, and it is the largest indoor Harry Potter attraction in the world and the only studio tour of its kind in Asia. Modelled on the original tour outside London, it lets fans step directly onto authentic recreations of the film sets from the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts series.

The experience is a self-guided walkthrough rather than a ride, and that is precisely its strength: there is no time limit, so you can explore at your own pace across roughly a two-to-four-hour visit. It begins, as the films did, with the great oak doors swinging open onto the Hogwarts Great Hall, its long tables set beneath towering walls and a ceiling of floating candles. From there the route unfolds through an enormous series of sets and galleries: the Gryffindor common room and dormitory, Dumbledore's office lined with portraits, the Potions classroom with its bubbling cauldrons, Hagrid's hut, the Ministry of Magic atrium, and the crooked, cobbled length of Diagon Alley where Ollivanders and Gringotts stand.

What sets the Tokyo tour apart are its exclusive additions built specifically for this location, including a recreation of the moving staircases and interactive elements you won't find at the original. Visitors can climb aboard the Hogwarts Express at a full-scale Platform 9 3/4, ride a broomstick against a green-screen so you appear to soar over London in your souvenir photo and video, and step into the shadowy Forbidden Forest where Buckbeak and a giant Aragog await. The scale is genuinely impressive - props, costumes and creatures used in the actual productions are displayed alongside detailed explanations of the filmmaking craft, from prosthetics to set construction.

Half the pleasure is in the details for grown-up fans and curious newcomers alike: the artistry of the model-makers, the animatronics, the sheer volume of hand-painted props. A dedicated section reveals how the special effects were achieved, demystifying the movie magic without diminishing it. Butterbeer - the sweet, non-alcoholic film-signature drink - is served in the on-site cafe, and an expansive gift shop sells wands, house scarves and robes.

The attraction sits on the former grounds of Toshimaen, a beloved amusement park that closed in 2020, giving the site a neat sense of continuity as a place of family entertainment. Because everything is indoors, it is a perfect choice regardless of weather and a strong option in Tokyo's hot, humid summers or rainy season.

Planning is essential: entry is by timed, pre-booked ticket and slots sell out, often weeks ahead in peak periods, so reserve online before you travel. Getting there is straightforward - take the Seibu Ikebukuro Line or the Toei Oedo Line to Toshimaen Station, roughly fifteen minutes from the major hub of Ikebukuro, and the entrance is a short two-minute walk. Arrive with time to spare, wear comfortable shoes, and budget a generous half-day; most visitors find the four hours pass quickly.

A local's tip

Book the earliest slot you can and pace yourself - the walkthrough is self-guided with no time limit, so you can linger on the Hogwarts Great Hall and Diagon Alley sets as long as you like.
