Uminonakamichi Seaside Park

Fukuoka· 3h visit· easy

A vast seaside flower park on a sandbar across Hakata Bay, blazing with tulips, nemophila and cosmos through the year.

Uminonakamichi Seaside Park sprawls across the long sandbar that reaches out into Hakata Bay, a national government park so large that most visitors rent bicycles rather than try to walk it. Its name means "the road in the middle of the sea," a fitting description for the narrow spit of land that carries it, with the open Genkai Sea on one side and the calm bay on the other. Opened in 1981, it was designed as a place for families to spend a whole day surrounded by flowers, water and open sky.

The park's greatest draw is its flower fields, which are replanted to keep colour flowing across the seasons. In early spring the flower beds fill with daffodils and hundreds of thousands of tulips; by mid-April the famous "flower picnic" reaches its peak as a haze of pale-blue nemophila spreads across the lawns alongside rapeseed and poppies. Summer brings sunflowers and roses, and autumn is arguably the most spectacular of all, when great sweeps of pink and white cosmos ripple in the sea breeze and mounds of kochia turn from green to crimson. Cherry trees add a spring flush, and photographers plan their visits around each bloom.

Beyond the flowers, Uminonakamichi is packed with things to do. There is a large animal enclosure and petting zone with capybaras, monkeys and flamingos, an expansive children's play area with trampolines and slides, and in summer a popular water park called Sunshine Pool. A well-paved cycling course loops the whole park, passing viewpoints out over the bay toward the Fukuoka skyline and Shikanoshima island. Adjoining the park is Marine World Uminonakamichi, one of Kyushu's major aquariums, so a combined visit easily fills a full day.

The scale of the place is best appreciated on two wheels. Bicycles, including tandems and family models, can be rented near the entrances, and the flat, breezy course is a joy in fine weather. There are restaurants, snack kiosks and shaded rest areas throughout, and the wide lawns are made for picnics. Because so much of the park is open to the sky and sea, it feels bright and spacious even on busy holidays, and the coastal air is a refreshing change from the city centre.

Getting there is half the fun. The JR Kashii Line runs directly to Uminonakamichi Station at the park's main gate, a straightforward ride that is covered by the Japan Rail Pass. Many visitors prefer the ferry, which crosses Hakata Bay from the city-side piers with fine views of the harbour and Fukuoka Tower along the way. The park charges a modest entry fee of a few hundred yen, with children entering cheaply, and keeps daytime hours that shorten slightly in winter. For families, cyclists and anyone who loves a good flower field, Uminonakamichi Seaside Park is one of the most rewarding day trips in the whole Fukuoka area.

A local's tip

Rent a bicycle at the entrance; the park is huge and flat, and the cycling course along the coast past the flower fields is far nicer than walking the whole thing.

Best time to visit

April for tulips and nemophila; October for cosmos and kochia
