Momochi Seaside Park

Fukuoka· 1h visit· easy

A man-made city beach beside Fukuoka Tower, with a curving white promenade, sea views and some of the best sunsets in the city.

Momochi Seaside Park is Fukuoka's beach in the city, a crescent of pale sand and landscaped promenade wrapped around the bay in the modern Seaside Momochi district. Unlike the wild coastlines further out, this is a designed waterfront, created as part of an urban development in the late 1980s and centred on leisure, views and easy access. With Fukuoka Tower soaring behind it and the open water of Hakata Bay in front, it is one of the most photogenic corners of the city and a favourite place for locals to unwind after work or on a warm weekend.

The park's centrepiece is its artificial beach, a gentle arc of imported sand where families paddle, couples stroll and, in the summer swimming season, sunbathers spread out along the shore. Rising from the water at the beach's heart is Marizon, a white Mediterranean-style complex of wedding chapels, restaurants and shops connected to the shore by a short bridge; its pale towers and the beach together give the area an almost resort-like feel that is unusual for a Japanese city centre. A wide promenade runs the length of the waterfront, perfect for a slow walk with the sea breeze.

What truly sets Momochi apart is the sunset. Because the beach faces west across the bay, the evening sun sinks straight over the water, and as the light fades the great lattice of Fukuoka Tower begins to glow beside it. The 234-metre tower, Japan's tallest seaside tower, is clad in mirrored glass by day and lit in changing seasonal colours by night, and from the beach it makes a spectacular backdrop. Sunset here, with the sky and sea turning gold and pink and the tower's lights coming up, is one of the classic Fukuoka experiences and draws a steady crowd of photographers.

The surrounding Seaside Momochi district adds to the appeal. Within an easy walk are Fukuoka Tower itself, with its observation deck, the domed PayPay Dome baseball stadium, the shops and cafes of the waterfront, and the Fukuoka City Museum, home to the ancient golden seal found on nearby Shikanoshima. This makes Momochi a natural hub for an afternoon and evening, combining a bit of beach time with sightseeing, dining and the tower view.

Access is straightforward. From Nishijin Station on the Kuko subway line it is about a twenty-minute walk north to the waterfront, and frequent city buses run closer to Fukuoka Tower and the beach from Hakata and Tenjin. The park is free and open at all hours, though swimming is limited to the summer season and lifeguarded periods. Whether you come to lie on the sand, walk the promenade, or simply find a bench to watch the sun drop behind Fukuoka Tower, Momochi Seaside Park delivers a relaxed dose of sea air right on the edge of the city.

A local's tip

Come at dusk: the artificial beach faces west, so you get the sun sinking over Hakata Bay with the illuminated Fukuoka Tower rising right beside the white wedding-chapel building Marizon.
