Tsutsujigaoka Park

Tsutsujigaoka Park is a small but deeply loved green space just one stop east of Sendai Station, so close to the city centre that its cherry blossoms are among the first many visitors see when they arrive in spring. Its name means Azalea Hill, and the low rise on which it sits has been a scenic spot since the Edo period, when it was a favourite viewing ground of the Date lords who ruled Sendai from the castle across town.

Today the park packs a surprising amount of history and atmosphere into its modest footprint. Broad lawns and gravel paths wind beneath mature cherry trees that explode into pink each April, drawing office workers, families and students for hanami just minutes from their trains. Because the park is elevated, the blossoms are set off against open sky, and evening illuminations during the peak days turn it into a gentle, lantern-lit gathering place.

At the heart of the park stands Tsutsujigaoka Tenmangu, a shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the deified scholar-statesman revered as the god of learning. Students throng here before university entrance exams to buy ema prayer plaques and omamori charms, and the shrine's plum trees - Michizane's emblem - blossom even earlier than the cherries, giving the park two distinct flowering seasons. The vermilion shrine buildings, stone lanterns and resident stone oxen add a quiet spiritual dimension to what is otherwise a everyday neighbourhood park.

The visiting experience is easygoing and authentically local. Outside blossom season Tsutsujigaoka is a place where Sendai simply relaxes: dog-walkers, joggers, children on the play equipment and pensioners resting on shaded benches. There is no entrance fee and the park is open at all hours, though the shrine keeps daytime hours for its office. Paths are largely level and easy to walk, and restrooms and vending machines are on hand.

The best time to come is unquestionably late March to early April, when the park becomes one of central Sendai's most convenient cherry-blossom spots, but the plum blossoms of February and the fresh green of early summer are quietly rewarding too. Because it is so central, it makes an ideal short stop rather than a destination in itself - fifteen minutes among the blossoms between other plans.

Getting there is effortless. The JR Senseki Line runs from Sendai Station to Tsutsujigaoka Station in a single stop, and the park lies immediately beside the station, a two-minute walk from the exit. This makes it one of the easiest green escapes in the city, and a natural pairing with the shops and food halls around Sendai Station or a walk along the nearby Hirose River. For travellers on a tight schedule who still want a taste of Japanese spring, few parks are so rewarding for so little effort.
