Sega's indoor amusement park in Odaiba - VR rides, a roller coaster and arcade thrills across three floors.

Tokyo Joypolis is Sega's flagship indoor amusement park, spread across three floors of the Decks Tokyo Beach shopping mall on the waterfront island of Odaiba. As Japan's largest indoor theme park of its kind, it blends the energy of a high-tech arcade with genuine amusement-park attractions - roller coasters, motion simulators, virtual-reality experiences and dozens of games - all under one climate-controlled roof, which makes it a superb choice for a rainy day or the peak of Tokyo's humid summer.

The park leans heavily on Sega's expertise in interactive entertainment, and its attractions are more technologically driven than the traditional rides of an outdoor park. The signature attraction is 'Halfpipe Tokyo,' a competitive ride in which two pods swing along a giant halfpipe while riders score points by spinning - it is genuinely thrilling and a firm favourite. An indoor roller coaster, 'Gekion Live Coaster,' threads through the building set to music, while a range of motion-simulator and screen-based rides put guests inside racing games, horror stories and fantasy adventures. VR attractions rotate over time, frequently tied to popular anime, game and film properties, so the line-up stays fresh for repeat visitors.

Alongside the big-ticket rides sits a large arcade floor packed with the latest Japanese arcade machines - rhythm games, claw machines (UFO catchers), racing cabinets and fighting games - the kind of dense, noisy, brilliantly lit game centre that Japan does better than anywhere else. There are also story-driven and horror-themed walk-through attractions, photo booths and seasonal events that transform parts of the park for Halloween, Christmas and anime collaborations.

Ticketing is flexible and worth understanding before you go. You can pay a lower price for simple entry and then pay per attraction, or buy a 'Passport' that includes entry plus unlimited access to the ride attractions. For anyone planning to ride more than three or four of the main attractions, the Passport quickly becomes the better value; casual visitors who mainly want the arcade and one or two rides may prefer entry plus individual tickets. Because Odaiba is an easy place to come and go, and Joypolis offers re-entry, some visitors split their time between the park and the island's other attractions.

The park suits teenagers, young adults, couples and families with older children more than it does very young kids, given the emphasis on simulators and higher-energy rides, though there is enough variety for a broad group. A thorough visit can fill three to four hours or more, especially if the arcade draws you in.

Odaiba itself is a purpose-built entertainment and shopping island in Tokyo Bay, so Joypolis pairs naturally with the surrounding malls, the seaside promenade, the bay views and other nearby attractions for a full day out. Getting there is straightforward on the driverless, elevated Yurikamome Line - a scenic ride over the Rainbow Bridge in its own right - alighting at Odaiba-Kaihinkoen Station about five minutes' walk away; the Rinkai Line's Tokyo Teleport Station is a slightly longer walk. Joypolis occupies the third to fifth floors of Decks Tokyo Beach, clearly signposted within the mall.

A local's tip

If you plan more than three attractions, the all-you-can-ride Passport pays for itself; head straight for the 'Halfpipe Tokyo' and the story-driven horror and VR attractions, which draw the longest lines later in the day.
