Suna-ba Coffee

Suna-ba Coffee is Tottori's most delightful piece of local self-deprecation turned into a genuine institution. For years Tottori held the distinction of being the last of Japan's 47 prefectures without a single Starbucks, and the running joke leaned on a pun: Tottori might have no Sutaba, the Japanese nickname for Starbucks, but it had plenty of sunaba, meaning sandpit, a nod to the famous Tottori Sand Dunes. When a local coffee company embraced the gag and named itself Suna-ba Coffee, a legend was born. The story drew national attention, and when Starbucks finally opened in Tottori in 2015, the homegrown Sunaba was ready and waiting, proudly playing the underdog.

Today Suna-ba Coffee is a beloved symbol of Tottori's humor and civic pride, and its station-front branch is one of the easiest and most enjoyable stops in the city. Just a few minutes' walk from JR Tottori Station, it serves the full range of cafe staples: well-made coffee, espresso drinks, and a rotating line of sweets and light bites, several of them playfully themed around sand and the dunes. The atmosphere is relaxed and cheerful, exactly what you would expect from a business built on a good-natured joke.

Beyond the caffeine, a visit here is a small cultural experience.
