Okutsukei Gorge

Okutsukei Gorge, also called Okutsu Valley, is widely regarded as Okayama Prefecture's finest autumn-leaf destination. It lies in Kagamino, deep in the mountainous north of the prefecture, where the clear Yoshii River carves a narrow valley through forested slopes just downstream of the historic Okutsu Onsen. In the space of a few kilometres the river tumbles over rapids, pools into glassy stretches, and slides past mossy boulders, all framed by maples, beeches, and other broadleaf trees that set the gorge ablaze each November.

The heart of the experience is a riverside walking trail that follows the water through the most scenic section of the valley. The path is gentle enough for casual walkers but rugged enough to feel like a proper mountain outing, passing rock formations, small waterfalls, and viewpoints where the river doubles the colour of the maples in its reflection. In autumn the contrast of red and gold foliage against the pale water and grey stone is genuinely spectacular, and the gorge draws photographers and leaf-viewing day-trippers from across western Japan during the short peak.

Autumn is emphatically the reason to come. The foliage typically peaks in early to mid November, when the valley is at its most vivid; weekends at that time can be busy, and an early start rewards you with quiet paths and soft morning light on the water. Outside the leaf season the gorge is a peaceful, little-visited river valley, pleasant for a cool summer walk when the shade and running water take the edge off the heat, and quietly beautiful under fresh spring green. Winter can bring snow and limited access.

A major part of the gorge's charm is its pairing with Okutsu Onsen, one of the region's classic hot-spring towns, immediately upstream. Many visitors combine a walk through the valley with a soak in a riverside bath and a night at a traditional inn, making the gorge an ideal centrepiece for a slow, restorative trip into rural Okayama rather than a rushed stop.

The outdoor trail is free and open at all times, with restrooms and parking at the trailheads and full facilities in the adjacent onsen town. Getting there by public transport takes patience: from JR Tsuyama Station, buses run north toward Okutsu and take roughly 60 to 80 minutes, with limited daily services, so check timetables carefully. A car via the Chugoku Expressway is far more convenient and lets you explore the wider valley and nearby villages. Allow around two hours to walk the main gorge section comfortably, and build in extra time for the onsen if you can.
