Norikura Kogen

Norikura Kogen is a highland plateau on the eastern flank of Mt. Norikura, a 3,026-metre volcano straddling the border of Nagano and Gifu prefectures in the Northern Japan Alps. Sitting at around 1,500 metres, the highlands form a peaceful mountain resort of forests, wetlands, waterfalls and hot springs, with the great cone of Norikura rising above and a network of gentle trails that make it one of the most accessible ways to experience genuine alpine scenery in central Japan.

The plateau itself is dotted with attractions reachable on foot or by bicycle. Two celebrated waterfalls, Zengoro Falls and the tiered Sanbondaki, tumble through the forest and are among the most photographed sights, especially when framed by fresh green in early summer or blazing foliage in autumn. Ushidome Pond mirrors the surrounding trees and, on still mornings, the peak of Norikura. Boardwalks cross marshy wetlands filled with alpine wildflowers in July and August, and quiet lanes wind between pensions, small lodges and a golf course, giving the area a relaxed, uncrowded feel quite different from the busier resorts of the region.

Norikura Kogen is also a gateway to the high mountains. Because private cars are banned on the toll road up the volcano to protect the fragile environment, visitors transfer to shuttle buses that climb to Tatamidaira, a plateau near the summit at around 2,700 metres and one of the highest points in Japan reachable by public bus. From there, a relatively short and non-technical walk leads to the summit ridge and the crater lakes, offering a taste of true 3,000-metre alpine terrain to walkers who would never tackle a serious climb. The bus season generally runs from late June to late October, and hikers should be prepared for cold, changeable weather even in midsummer.

After a day outdoors, the highlands' hot springs are a major draw. Norikura Kogen has its own onsen sources, and several lodges and public baths let visitors soak in mineral-rich waters, some milky and sulphurous, while looking out over the forest. The combination of hiking, waterfalls and hot springs makes for a satisfying overnight stay, and staying up here also means quieter trails in the early morning before day trippers arrive.

In winter the character changes completely: the plateau becomes a small, low-key ski area known for its snow and for cross-country trails, and the surrounding forests are wrapped in deep powder. For most travellers, though, the green and golden seasons from July to October are the prime time, when the flowers, waterfalls and summit views are all at their best.

Getting here follows the same route as Kamichi's other Alpine gems: from Matsumoto, ride the Alpico railway to Shin-Shimashima and continue by bus up to the highlands, then transfer to the summit shuttle in season. Free to enter and rich in easy natural attractions, Norikura Kogen offers a gentler, less-visited alternative to Kamikochi while delivering the same sense of standing deep in the Japan Alps.
