Nogeyama Park Observation Deck

Yokohama· 0.7h visit· moderate

A leafy hilltop park above central Yokohama with a free zoo, cherry blossoms and views toward the Minato Mirai skyline.

Nogeyama Park (野毛山公園) is a relaxed, leafy hilltop park rising above the lively Nogeyama district just west of Sakuragichō, offering a green, family-friendly viewpoint over central Yokohama that is refreshingly free of tourist crowds. Combining an elevated lookout, a much-loved free zoo, cherry-blossom groves and open lawns, it is a favourite of local families and a rewarding stop for travellers who want a more everyday, neighbourhood-flavoured perspective on the city.

The park dates back to 1926, laid out on a hill that had earlier held foreign residences and an important early waterworks, and it became one of Yokohama's first public parks. Its elevated position gives views across the rooftops of the city toward the harbour and the Minato Mirai 21 skyline, whose towers and Ferris wheel rise in the distance beyond the nearer streets. From the park's observation points and open areas you get a pleasant, if partly tree-framed, panorama — a gentler, greener vantage than the waterfront decks, and a nice contrast to them.

The park's star attraction is the Nogeyama Zoo, which is genuinely free to enter — a rarity — and home to a surprising range of animals, from lions, tigers and red pandas to reptiles and a petting corner, all in a compact, walkable layout. It is a beloved local institution and makes the park an easy hit with children, adding an extra dimension to a visit that most viewpoints cannot offer. The zoo keeps daytime hours and closes on Mondays, while the surrounding park is open at all times.

Seasonally, Nogeyama comes into its own in spring. It is one of central Yokohama's finest — and least touristy — cherry-blossom spots, its slopes and paths lined with sakura that bloom in early April, drawing local hanami picnickers to the lawns beneath the pink canopy, with the distant city towers as a backdrop. Autumn brings colour to the trees, and the open, grassy areas make it a pleasant place to relax in any season.

Beyond the zoo and the views, the park has playgrounds, benches, walking paths and a quiet, community atmosphere, and the lively Nogeyama and Noge districts at its foot are famous for their dense warren of tiny bars and eateries — a great place to descend to for food and drink after a visit. This pairing of hilltop green space and buzzing downhill nightlife is very characteristic of Yokohama.

Access is a fifteen-minute uphill walk from Sakuragichō Station on the JR Negishi Line and the Blue Line subway; the climb is the main effort, but it is manageable and takes you through an atmospheric older neighbourhood. The park and zoo are free.

Allow around 40 minutes for the viewpoint and a wander, or considerably longer if you explore the zoo or come for cherry-blossom season, when the park deserves a leisurely visit. It is not a dramatic, high-elevation panorama, but as a free, green, family-friendly and distinctly local viewpoint — with a free zoo and superb spring blossom thrown in — Nogeyama Park is a charming and characterful choice.

A local's tip

Combine the free Nogeyama Zoo with the hilltop lookout — in early April the park is one of central Yokohama's best and least touristy cherry-blossom spots, with the Minato Mirai towers rising beyond the pink canopy.
