Mount Katsuga Observatory

Rising to a little over three hundred and sixty metres north-west of central Takamatsu, Mount Katsuga is a quiet, forested peak that offers one of the best off-the-beaten-track viewpoints in the area. Where Yashima and Megijima draw the crowds, Katsuga rewards those willing to seek it out with a peaceful climb through woodland and a broad, uncluttered outlook over Takamatsu Bay and the Seto Inland Sea. It is a favourite of local hikers and history enthusiasts rather than tour groups, which is much of its charm.

The summit is crowned by the earthworks of Katsuga Castle, a medieval mountain fortress that once guarded the approaches to the plain below. Little remains but grassed-over ramparts, terraces and the shape of old defensive works, yet these ruins add a layer of atmosphere and history to the climb, and they double conveniently as a natural viewing platform. Standing among the earthworks, you can look out over the city, the harbour and the island-dotted sea much as the fortress's medieval defenders once did, keeping watch over the coast.

The view itself is expansive. From the ridge and summit clearings the whole of Takamatsu Bay spreads out, with the city, the port and the plateau of Yashima visible across the water, and the familiar rounded hills of Kagawa filling the middle distance. Clear mornings offer the sharpest visibility, when the outlines of distant islands and bridges stand crisp against the sea. In spring the wooded slopes carry cherry blossom, and autumn brings warm foliage to the trail, so the mountain changes character pleasantly through the year.

Because it is relatively undeveloped, Katsuga suits visitors who enjoy combining a modest hike with their views. Trails climb through mixed forest to the summit, offering birdsong, shade and the quiet satisfaction of a landscape largely to oneself. The walking is moderate rather than strenuous, but sturdy shoes and a little care on the uneven upper paths are worthwhile, and the historic ruins give a clear, rewarding goal for the ascent.

Access is easiest for those with their own transport. A mountain road climbs much of the way up Katsuga, leaving only a short trail to the summit ruins and lookout, and reaching the trailhead by car or taxi is far simpler than the long approach on foot from the nearest railway stations. For travellers who have already seen Takamatsu's famous sights and want a calmer, more contemplative viewpoint with a touch of medieval history, Mount Katsuga is a quietly excellent choice above the bay.
