Kishamichi Promenade

Yokohama· 0.5h visit· easy

A restored historic-railway walking promenade with the classic head-on view of the Minato Mirai skyline.

The Kishamichi Promenade (汽車道) is a free, atmospheric waterfront walkway that delivers one of the most iconic head-on views of Yokohama's Minato Mirai skyline. Built along the route of a historic harbour freight railway — kishamichi means 'the train road' — it carries walkers across a series of preserved iron trestle bridges over the harbour water, connecting Sakuragichō to the Shinko district and the Red Brick Warehouse, and framing the futuristic cityscape with a real sense of the port's industrial past.

The promenade traces the line of the Yokohama Rinkō freight railway, which from 1911 hauled cargo between the docks and the main rail network across this stretch of water. When the harbour was redeveloped into the Minato Mirai 21 district, rather than erase the old line, planners repurposed it: the original riveted-iron trestle bridges were restored, sections of the old rails were left embedded in the walkway, and the whole route was reborn in 1997 as a pedestrian promenade that celebrates its own history. The result is a walk with genuine character — the heavy old ironwork underfoot and around you, the water on both sides, and the gleaming modern city rising ahead.

The views are the reason it is a must-walk. Because the promenade heads straight across the water toward the heart of Minato Mirai, it lines up the district's signature landmarks in a single, perfectly composed vista: the soaring Landmark Tower, the sail-shaped InterContinental hotel, the office towers of Queen's Square, and — dominating the scene — the giant Cosmo Clock 21 Ferris wheel with its ever-changing lights. From the trestle bridges the whole skyline is reflected in the calm harbour water, making this one of the most photographed viewpoints in the city.

It is spectacular after dark. In the evening the Ferris wheel cycles through its light shows, the towers illuminate, and the reflections double the display across the water; the old iron bridges are softly lit, and the promenade becomes a romantic, cinematic stroll. Small wonder it is a favourite for couples, evening walkers and photographers chasing the classic Yokohama night shot.

The promenade is short — a walk of perhaps ten minutes end to end — and works best as a link in a larger waterfront wander, naturally joining Sakuragichō and the Landmark Tower area at one end to the Red Brick Warehouse, Cup Noodles Museum and Shinko waterfront at the other. Combine it with the Yokohama Air Cabin (whose cable runs nearby) for an air-and-ground pairing over the same scenery.

Access is a five-minute walk from Sakuragichō Station on the JR Negishi Line and the Blue Line subway. The promenade is free, always open, and largely barrier-free. Allow around 30 minutes to walk it slowly, pause on the trestle bridges for photos, and take in the skyline — longer if you come at dusk to catch the transition into the illuminated night view. Free, historic and offering the definitive front-on view of Minato Mirai, the Kishamichi Promenade is one of Yokohama's essential short walks.

A local's tip

Stop on the old iron railway trestle bridge for the postcard shot — the Landmark Tower and Cosmo Clock Ferris wheel line up perfectly across the water, and after dark the whole skyline reflects in the canal.
