Cosmo World and Cosmo Clock 21

Yokohama Cosmo World is a compact, free-to-enter amusement park in the heart of the Minato Mirai waterfront, instantly recognisable for the enormous Ferris wheel that dominates the district's skyline. The park is unusual in that admission is free and visitors pay only for the rides they choose, making it an easy, flexible stop for families, couples and thrill-seekers weaving it into a day of harbour sightseeing.

The undisputed star is the Cosmo Clock 21, a 112.5-metre-tall Ferris wheel that doubles as a giant digital clock, its illuminated numerals glowing at the hub. When it first opened it was billed as the tallest Ferris wheel in the world and the largest clock, and although newer wheels have since surpassed its height, it remains one of Japan's most famous and beloved. A full rotation takes about fifteen minutes, lifting each gondola high above the bay for sweeping views over Minato Mirai, the Landmark Tower, the harbour and, on clear days, distant Mount Fuji. A few see-through gondolas add a thrill for those with a head for heights, and after dark the wheel becomes a canvas for dazzling animated light shows synchronised with the surrounding towers.

Around the wheel the park packs in a surprising variety of attractions across three zones. The signature ride is the Vanish, a roller coaster that plunges dramatically into a splash pool, appearing to vanish underwater. There are spinning rides, a haunted house, boat rides on the park's water channels, gentle attractions and carousels for younger children, and a large arcade and game centre for rainy weather. The rides are cleverly threaded between waterways and bridges, so the park flows in and out of the surrounding promenade rather than sitting behind walls.

Because entry is free, many visitors come simply to soak up the atmosphere, photograph the Ferris wheel, and enjoy the food stalls and views without buying a single ride ticket. The setting is superb, right on the water with the Red Brick Warehouse, the Cup Noodles Museum and the Landmark Tower all within a few minutes' walk, and the whole area is at its most magical after sunset, when the illuminations turn the waterfront into a sea of colour reflected in the harbour.

The park is exceptionally accessible, just a few minutes on foot from Minatomirai Station and a short walk from Sakuragicho, and it makes a natural pairing with the neighbouring museums and shopping malls. Individual ride tickets are inexpensive and discounted multi-ride passbooks are available for those planning to ride several times. Whether you go up in the Ferris wheel for the view, brave the splashing coaster, or simply admire the glowing wheel from the promenade below, Cosmo World is a fun and photogenic slice of Yokohama's playful waterfront.
