Kankakei Gorge (Shodoshima)

Kankakei Gorge, at the mountainous heart of the island of Shodoshima in the Seto Inland Sea, is ranked as one of the three most beautiful gorges in all of Japan, and in autumn it is arguably the most spectacular scenic destination in the Setouchi region. Formed over millions of years by volcanic activity and erosion, the gorge is a wild landscape of jagged rock spires, sheer cliffs, and craggy pinnacles cloaked in dense forest, plunging dramatically down the mountainside. The interplay of raw grey rock and lush greenery is striking in any season, but it reaches its climax when the autumn foliage sets the entire ravine ablaze.

The classic way to experience Kankakei is by ropeway. A cable car glides up the length of the gorge between a lower station and a more developed upper station, and the ride offers constantly changing, aerial views of the rock formations and forest below — a genuinely thrilling perspective, particularly when the maples and other trees turn crimson, orange, and gold in the second half of November. This foliage season is famous throughout Japan and draws large numbers of visitors, making the ropeway cars and viewpoints lively with photographers. The gorge is also lovely in the fresh green of spring and early summer.

At the upper station, several observation decks and viewpoints command sweeping panoramas not only of the gorge itself but out over Shodoshima and the island-studded Inland Sea beyond, with the mountains and water stretching to the horizon. A shop and restaurant there let visitors linger over the view. For those who want a more immersive experience, hiking trails connect the upper and lower stations, winding among the very rock spires and cliffs that the ropeway passes overhead; walking one direction and riding the other is a popular and rewarding way to appreciate the gorge from within.

Shodoshima, the island on which the gorge lies, is a destination in its own right, known for its olive groves — it was the first place in Japan to successfully cultivate olives — as well as soy sauce production, a photogenic tidal sandbar called Angel Road, and terraced rice fields. Kankakei can easily be combined with these other island attractions to fill a full and varied day.

Reaching Kankakei requires a ferry to Shodoshima, with regular services from Takamatsu taking about an hour, followed by a bus to the ropeway's lower station; the island is administratively part of Kagawa Prefecture. Because access involves a ferry crossing and island travel, an early start or an overnight stay on Shodoshima is advisable, especially in the busy autumn season. The ropeway charges a round-trip fare, and services and hours vary seasonally.
